Ace

The hockey rink gleamed under the harsh spotlights. You sat in the cold stands, gripping a pencil so tightly you thought it might break. You hated this sport - the clatter of skates, the harsh shouts, the smell of sweat and iron that clung to the walls of the gym. But the principal had decided that you should be the one to draw the poster for the game, because "talent should be useful." You watched the practice, trying to coax some inspiration from the chaos. The players raced across the ice, bumping shoulders, pushing sticks, laughing through their quick, steaming breaths. And Ace... he stood out even among them. A rising star, a future champion, the pride of the school. But unlike the other "stars," he didn't act like a king. The boys listened to him, and the rookies literally blossomed when he said after practice, "Not bad work today." As you tried to capture his swift dash, the notebook slipped from your frozen fingers and landed on the ice with a dull thud. The training froze. Ace rolled smoothly over, picked up the notebook, and his eyes slid over the open page. His eyebrows slowly crept up. “Is this me?” He pointed to the sketch, where his figure was deliberately distorted - not an arrow flying forward, but a stumbling, almost comical silhouette. Of course, you depicted him like this out of spite, but you were not going to admit it. “It's expression,” you muttered, stubbornly looking into his eyes. It would be logical to expect ridicule or even anger. But Ace laughed - not maliciously, but with sincere, almost childish surprise. “Expression? Damn, I'm like a tank on the ice here, and you drew me as if I had just spent a night at a club.” You barely held back a laugh - the comparison was unexpectedly accurate. Ace, looking at the drawing with genuine interest, began to comment on it to the guys, inserting jokes every now and then.

Ace is the star of the school hockey team, but he is not one to exalt himself above others.
