Deuce is a fair-skinned young man of average height. His short, neatly-combed hair is dark navy blue, with short side swept bangs. His eyes are bright cyan in color, and over his right eye is a black marking shaped like a spade symbol. He is often shown with a serious or determined expression.

His dorm uniform is similar to the rest of the Heartslabyul students. While in uniform, he wears subtle eyeshadow the same color as his spade-shaped marking. The uniform's top consists of an outer jacket, a patterned vest, and a white, scoop-neck undershirt. The jacket is mainly white with a yellow trim and red underlining. His right sleeve is black, while his left has a black and white checkerboard pattern.

The lapels of the jacket are shaped like a heart, and are asymmetrically colored black and red. Two yellow shoulder cords hang from his left shoulder strap, resembling those worn by army soldiers. On his left lapel is a white rose, halfway covered in red paint. Also on the left side of his jacket is a gold, heart-shaped brooch with a yellow “QH” inside, and a printed symbol of Heartslabyul. There is also a playing card displaying the Two of Spades, a card unique to Deuce’s uniform.

Heartslabyul vests can either be red or black in color; Deuce chooses to wear a black one. The vest is patterned with all four card suits, as well as crowns and roses. Wrapped around his waist is a yellow and black striped sash, tied together on his left side under a white circular pin, with red ruffles and a yellow “H” in the center. His pants are white to match the jacket, with a yellow stripe running down the outer seams. His shoes are white, high-top sneakers with a black tongue, two black shoe straps, red stripes, and white laces. On the tongue of the sneaker is a gold pin with a black spade inside.

Deuce is a serious and straightforward person who is constantly working to better himself. After spending his middle school years as a troublemaking delinquent, he wants to turn his life around, and is still getting used to regular school life. He values hard work, and applies himself completely to everything he does. He means well, but his unfaltering diligence compensates for a lack of tact, so the occasional slip-up is inevitable.

Because he aspires to be an honor student, Deuce does his best to be punctual and succeed academically, although this doesn’t always work out in his favor. In most situations, he relies more on instinct than intellect. While this mindset may help him in a pinch, it makes him a bit of a slow learner. But what he lacks in brains he makes up for in brawn; when he was a delinquent, he used to get into plenty of fights, and he has the physical stamina to prove it.

In order to remedy his past behavior, Deuce does what he can to keep his reputation intact. He tries not to pick fights, and minds his manners around his superiors whenever possible. As hard as he tries to manage his impulses, though, his delinquent persona may resurface under certain circumstances. And if he notices any injustice or cruel treatment of others, he isn’t afraid to lash out and settle things with his fists.

Deuce is an only child and lived with his single mother. Because he was the only man in the house, he helped her with chores, as well as repairing appliances. Deuce was always a slow-learner, and overtime he felt frustrated that his grades don't match the amount of effort he put into studying. He started to take the easy way out to excuse why he's doing poorly at school. He became a delinquent - he started to skip class, get into fights, and associate himself with bullies. One day, he overheard his mother talking to his grandmother over the phone. She was in tears, lamenting Deuce's actions and wondering if she failed as a parent because of them. Despite everything, he cared for his mother deeply, so after hearing this, he vowed to never make his mother cry again. From then on, he strived to make her proud by changing his behavior and becoming a model student at Night Raven College.

Deuce's signature spell is called "Double Down". It allows him to counter an opponent's magic with magic equally as powerful. The stronger the opponent, the more effective this spell becomes.[8] He first used it against some men who were picking on him and Epel while they were outside of school grounds, but it was accidental as at the time Deuce didn't realize what happened.

Deuce’s first name references to a card with a face value of 2. His surname Spade is one of the four card suits in playing cards. Deuce mentions that the only pink clothing he possesses is a bright pink leopard print suit.[10] According to Cater, he knows how to fix machinery, as he fixed the audio system at Heartslabyul's lounge.[11] Deuce says that he picked up the skills while helping out his mom at home. He takes a lot of time solving simple math problems, such as basic Algebra.[12] Deuce gets easily nervous when talking to women since he doesn't know what to say.[13] He wants to become a magical enforcement officer of the elite anti-mage division in the future.[14] In the Japanese version, his signature spell is instead called "Bet the Limit." His is one of the only signature spells whose name was altered for the English release, along with Trey, Jamil, and Rook. Deuce doesn't find it worth playing cards with Ace, as he always cheats.

Students are only allowed to enroll in this school if they have the potential for being a great magician, a factor which is determined by the Dark Mirror. A black carriage will be sent to personally pick up incoming students, which can even travel underwater.[1] They are kept unconscious in coffins called "Gates" until arriving at the academy. In most cases, they can only be awoken if their Gate is unlocked with a special key[2], however there are exceptions.

All students are given a magical pen upon enrollment. These are fountain pens which hold the user's magic gemstones, and so are also utilized as wands. The color of one's gemstone is determined by which dorm they are in. They are capable of changing form, but so far this has only been shown with the dorm leaders.

However, there have been no such cases for Heartslabyul after Riddle became the housewarden of that dorm.
