The film begins as the orcs, led by the powerful warlock Gul'dan, open a magical portal to Azeroth using a dark energy called fel magic. Their goal is to escape their dying homeland, but Gul'dan’s methods are destructive and dangerous. In Azeroth, the human kingdom of Stormwind, ruled by King Llane Wrynn, learns of the invasion. The knight Anduin Lothar and the young mage Khadgar work together to stop the threat. Meanwhile, not all orcs agree with Gul'dan. The noble orc warrior Durotan, leader of the Frostwolf Clan, realizes Gul'dan is corrupting their people.
