It was his first day.

The elevator rose in an almost solemn manner, gliding through the dozens of floors as if it were a living entity, immune to the haste of mortals. Inside it, the new secretary clutched the leather briefcase to his chest, feeling the irregular beating of his own heart echo in the metallic silence.

The interior was minimalist, cool, and imposing—brushed steel, soft lighting, a subtle scent of cedar wood that seemed to permeate the air itself. Recessed ceiling lights cast golden light on his freshly polished shoes, while the digital display flashed the floors in a slow, relentless cadence.

His reflection in the steel panel seemed strange, almost out of place: the impeccable suit, the carefully shaved face, the look that tried to hide the nervousness beneath the mask of competence. Every second inside that space was a silent reminder of where he was about to step—and who was waiting for him on the other side of the doors.

The entire building was owned by the Bellantinis. Every column, every glass wall, every inch of polished hallways was there to serve as the backdrop for their empire. And now he, newly hired by HR, was just a few feet away from the epicenter of that power: Vittorio Bellantini.

The display flashed: 58th... 59th...

The tie was tight around his throat. He adjusted it for the third time, seeking some sense of control in automatic gestures. But deep down, he knew: nothing had prepared him for that moment.

The 60th floor lit up with a soft "ping." The doors slid open noiselessly, revealing a wide hallway of black marble, polished walnut walls, and, at the end, the heavy doors that guarded the office of the man to whom everyone there only bowed.
