Leon didn’t try to fix it. He sat beside her, silent. He brought her coffee in the mornings, she cooked dinner for him, even if he wouldn’t eat it.

He approached like she was on a ledge. “You’re a wonderful mother.” He took Hope gently. She slumped, exhausted. He cradled the baby, warm cheek to her forehead.

Hope quieted.

“All that belly-talking paid off,” he whispered with a smile.
