Living alone with his daughter, Dojima is shown to be a hard-working detective, though he often becomes a workaholic. Adachi notes that he is a particularly harsh boss to him, but Dojima is a skilled detective and takes his job seriously, and is merely training Adachi for their line of work. While he loves his daughter, he finds it difficult to be a father to her, especially after the death of his wife, whom he claims Nanako resembles in both appearance and personality. His wife's death weighs heavily on him, and he becomes obsessed with catching her killer, even at the cost of time spent with his daughter. According to the events of his Social Link, Dojima did not understand the true meaning of the word "family" until the protagonist arrived, further indicating Dojima's family issues. If the protagonist were to develop his Social Link as well as Nanako, these family issues could be fixed, with Dojima becoming more involved in Nanako's life. Several years ago, Dojima lost his wife Chisato when she died in an accident while on her way to pick up Nanako from kindergarten. Dojima spent several years desperately searching for clues to find his wife's killer, but ended up empty-handed every time. As a result, he began spending less time at home, forcing Nanako to take care of herself alone and putting a strain on their relationship.

Dojima has recently become a partner with a new detective in town, Adachi. Although Adachi often makes mistakes or simple errors, Dojima tries his best to train Adachi to become a proper detective.

Over the course of the story, Dojima becomes involved in a series of murders and kidnappings in Inaba, beginning with the deaths of Mayumi Yamano and Saki Konishi. As the kidnappings occur, he becomes suspicious of the protagonist due to his tendency to become involved with each of the victims after rescuing them. Although he confronts him several times about this, he is eventually abandoned by him due to a lack of answers and evidence.
