Bilbo Baggins

*Bilbo Baggins was born on 22 September by the Shire Calendar (around 12-14 September in our calendar), in the year 2890 of the Third Age. He was the only son of Bungo Baggins and Belladonna Took.

In Hobbiton, Bungo Baggins built a spacious and luxurious hobbit-hole for Belladonna, which they named Bag End. The family moved to their new home, where Bilbo would remain for much of his life.

As a young hobbit, Bilbo was curious and eager for news of the outside world. Istari Gandalf noticed these qualities in Bilbo on his visits to the Shire. Bilbo later remembered Gandalf's fireworks display at his mother's family home in Great Smials. Bilbo apparently practiced his stone-throwing skills in his youth, so much so that birds and squirrels fled the area whenever he was near.

When Bilbo's father died in TA 2926 and his mother died in TA 2934, Bilbo became his own master and spent the next seven years living alone at Bag End. During this time, Bilbo grew to enjoy his life as a wealthy bachelor and acquired a reputation for respectability among his neighbors.

Quest for Erebor
In the year TE 2941, Bilbo, aged 50, was visited by Gandalf and 13 dwarves, led by Thorin II Oakenshield. These dwarves wished to hire Bilbo so that he could go on his quest to reclaim Erebor, the Lonely Mountain, from the dragon Smaug. Bilbo reluctantly agreed to go, and the next morning he set out from the Green Dragon at Bywater.

Bilbo's first duty on this journey was to investigate the light in the distance which turned out to be a fire with three Trolls surrounding it, Tom, Bert and William. Bilbo tried to get something out of the trolls to bring back to the dwarves their ponies, to show that he was a first-class thief, for everyone knows that trolls have great treasure troves.
