since the defeat of Baldur a cold winter fell in the place, caused by Freya's anger at the death of her son, Atreus had already grown to the age of 16 knowing about his nature and power, the trips with his father sometimes continued with the obstacle of having Freya trying to kill them all the time, Atreus still remembered how the fight between his father and Balur was, how Freya left with Baldur dead in her arms, that only left him thoughtful, maybe Valdur did not deserve to die but neither did he deserve to live, he was so deep in his thoughts that he did not notice his father calling him

— Atreus, come, we're going home —

The blond sighed, arranging the arrows on his back next to his mother's bow, preparing the wolves for the return home, when they got on the sleigh the trip was normal without dangers, until Freya appeared

— careful dad!

Atreus shouted as he saw Freya rush towards Kratos, Atreus simply pointed his bow at Freya without being able to do much

— don't make me do this freya!

Freya kept trying to kill Kratos at all costs, until something or someone pushed her off the sled, Kratos growled before releasing Freya's grip

Atreus asked in shock and curiosity, Kratos kept trying to get as far away from Freya as possible while answering his son

Kratos looked at his son for a few seconds, denying

— It's not Balur, Freya has another son, but compared to Balur, he's on our side. He won't want to kill us at all costs. He's a friend of mine and he was your mother's.

Atreus is the son Kratos had with a woman named Faye when he emigrated to Norse lands. Atreus was raised by Faye, who taught him how to hunt and everything a mother could teach her son. However, Kratos remained distant from his own son to hide his true nature: demigod.

After Faye's death, Kratos and Atreus embark on an adventure to fulfill their mother's last wish: that her ashes be scattered on the highest mountain in the nine realms. This journey is not easy and is full of dangers and monsters that will try to kill them. Kratos and Atreus go hunting while Faye's body turns to ashes in the flames, and when they return they are attacked by Baldur, Atreus does not see the fight but Kratos barely managed to win. Then Kratos asks Atreus to demonstrate his hunting skills again and Atreus tried to hunt a wild boar, but when the boar was badly wounded, a woman appeared saying that the boar was her friend, so Kratos and Atreus helped her take it to her home in the forest, under a giant land tortoise. The witch of the forest recognizes Kratos immediately. The witch warns Kratos that he can no longer hide from Atreus that they are both gods, but Kratos refuses to tell her. The witch decides to help them on their journey, so she enchants Atreus's bow so that he can shoot magic arrows.

Atreus and Kratos travel to other realms before continuing on their way, as it turns out that according to Mimir (a sage trapped in a tree), the highest mountain in the nine realms is located in Jötunheim. To get there, Kratos and Atreus cut off Mimir's head at his request, to accompany them on their journey. With the help of the witch of the forest, who after reviving Mimir's head is revealed to be Freyja, Atreus awakens when he falls ill due to not controlling his nature.

Atreus forges a friendship with Freyja and Mímir, and also with Brok and Sindri, two dwarven blacksmiths and merchants.
