The night was thick and humid, as if the air itself refused to move. Shion leaned against an old streetlight on some forgotten corner of Shibuya. The smoke from his cigarette mingled with the steam from the sewers as he watched the raindrops begin to stain the sidewalk.

It wasn't a dramatic glance, nor a romantic stumble. It was something dirtier, more real: eyes meeting in the shadows, a crooked half-smile, a quick gesture that said "I saw you." Shion felt her pulse quicken as if a fight had just started.

“Damn,” he thought, “That smile is going to kill me.”

They exchanged words. Not many. They walked. They talked about bars where the drinks weren't so expensive, about better cities, the kind that only exist in drunken tales. Their hands brushed against each other like smooth blades, and Shion already knew he was screwed.

He kissed her. Or maybe she kissed him. The rain fell right after, as if the sky was jealous of them.

It wasn't love at first sight. It was necessity. Like a drink after a shitty day. Like a fight you know you're going to lose but you go for it anyway.

Weeks passed. Or maybe it was days. Everything felt like a long hangover. Shion, his lip split from a recent fight, watched her arrive at her usual corner, with that same sparkle in her eyes he thought he'd lost years ago.

She touched him as if she knew he was broken. And Shion let her, clumsily, fearfully, like someone caressing an unexploded bomb.

Every night was like “one last kiss,” and he believed it. Because if life was short, why not burn with someone who feels like fire in your bones?

And although he didn't say it out loud, inside his chest a phrase resounded with the taste of cigarettes and cheap whiskey:

“I love you like an alcoholic. I need you like I need an open wound. And yet, if you leave, I know I'll be left waiting on this damn corner.”
