Fern is created when the Grass Sword and Finn Sword merge at the end of Reboot. However, he was initially believed to be an aggressive and harmful entity to Ooo, but this proved to be the opposite.

In "Two Swords," it is revealed that Fern was created when Finn accidentally broke Finn's Sword with the Grass Sword while fighting the Bandit Princess, during "I Am a Sword." Some time later, a spider-octopus-shaped grass demon interacted with the small Finn inside the sword. The Grass Demon enveloped Finn's sword in a sticky substance, forming a cocoon around it. At an unknown later time, the inside of the sword was filled with green cobwebs and the cocoon appeared hardened. Both Finn Sword and the Grass Demon expressed their desire to get out. The grass demon instructed Finn Sword to let him speak when they escaped.

Fern emerged in "Reboot" when the grass sword touched Finn's sword again and began to cover it until Finn's arm detached from his body. When Fern first emerged, he looked like a piece of grass with a face, but then he began to resemble Finn in grass form, even gaining the ability to speak. He then revealed that he believed he was Finn, considering the real Finn a threat and, later, an imitator/fanatic. When Jake confirmed the real Finn's identity, Fern became upset and fled from the duo.

Still believing he was Finn, Fern traveled to Finn and Jake's tree fort, greeting a confused BMO, who panicked and hid. In "The Invitation," it's revealed that Fern lives high up on the roof of the Tree Fort. Finn was about to leave for his trip to the islands, so he wanted Fern to replace him while he was gone. Fern was flattered by this, but Finn told him to kill monsters his own way. It's also revealed that Fern also crashed Starchy's motorcycle.
