Information
Donquixote Doflamingo (ドンキホーテ・ドフラミンゴ, Donkihōte Dofuramingo), better known by his epithets: Heavenly Demon (天夜叉, Ten Yasha) in the piracy world, Joker (ジョーカー, Jōkā) in the Underworld; and the Charisma of Evil (悪のカリスマ, Aku no Karisuma), is a former Warlord of the Sea, who reigned over Dressrosa, and a former World Noble. Son of Donquixote Homing and older brother of Donquixote Rosinante, he is a member of the Donquixote Family (the ruling royal family, eight hundred years ago, in the country). Doflamingo is the captain of the Donquixote Pirates and the least influential of the Underworld, behind the alias "Joker". Before being part of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, the World Government placed a bounty of Belly 340,000,000 on him. Doflamingo was stripped of his title of king and expelled from the Seven Warlords of the Sea, after being defeated by Monkey D. Luffy. He and almost his entire crew were arrested by Admiral Fujitora and are currently being held on level six of Impel Down, under solitary confinement. Despite his recurring appearances in the first part of the series, he was not considered a threat to the Straw Hat Pirates, but after the events of Punk Hazard, he became the main antagonist of the Dressrosa Saga.
Appearance
Childhood: Since he was a child, Doflamingo had a fondness for glasses, although he had yet to acquire his beloved trademarks. Before leaving Mary Geoise, Doflamingo wore the typical attire of the Celestial Dragons, though his hairstyle did not follow the same style due to it not being long enough to comb, and was instead neat and tidy, in a bowl cut. After leaving, Doflamingo's wardrobe consisted of simple fine clothes: a low-collar button-down shirt with black stripes and a frilly necktie. However, due to the harsh life on the run from angry citizens, Doflamingo's appearance started to become more disheveled (this is how Oda draws him in SBS Volume 63): Doflamingo is seen wearing his sunglasses and smoking a cigarette. His hair and clothes are dirty and very unkempt. He is wearing a button-down shirt, striped pants and is barefoot. He can be seen sitting in a tattered armchair near some palm trees.
Youth: At seventeen, his hair was longer than it is currently, he had two earrings in his left ear and he sported a pair of glasses that he wore on his forehead. Additionally, he also wore glasses similar to the ones you wear today, but they had a different temple design, and his signature feather and cloak. At twenty-five, when Law first requests him to be a crew member, Doflamingo appears without his glasses, his hair was slightly longer and with a spiked end, but otherwise, he looked the same: he wore a black dress shirt with a tie and his pants were black, with the same pattern he always wears on them and on the collar, he wore a red pearl necklace. At 31, his hair was even longer and spikier; he still wore his trademark feathered coat, an open black shirt, semi-long pants and dark shoes with some heel.
appearance
Two Years Ago: Two years ago, he wore a white shirt with red stripes, a green belt, and orange pants with white stripes. He also wore black pointy shoes. Originally, in the anime, Doflamingo wore a red shirt with black stripes, a purple belt, and black pants with red stripes. However, when he reappeared during the events of Sabaody, his color scheme was changed back to his original manga color scheme, with the exception of his glasses. In the manga, he has orange glasses, while in the anime, they are purple. He is also almost always seen smiling, even in critical moments.
Present: Doflamingo is a very tall man. His hair is blond, and he is quite thin and muscular at the same time; his skin is tanned. He generally dresses in extravagant clothing. In reference to his theme animal, the flamingo, his clothes are bright and gaudy, with his trademark pink feather coat. Doflamingo wears purple sunglasses. He also has a strange way of walking, like a knock-kneed person (although he does not always walk this way), which is also a reference to his theme animal: the flamingo. Doflamingo's clothing is somewhat less elaborate than in his younger appearances: he wears a plain, open shirt with a pair of Jolly Rogers on the cuff, a different belt, and pink striped pants with white zebra stripes. However, he still wears his sunglasses, which have changed from orange to purple (from purple to red in the anime). We also see an innovation in his signature down coat: two years after the war, we see that he no longer tucks the sleeves over his arms, instead leaving them loose behind him (similar to many high-ranking Marines and several pirates). He also now wears a gold hoop earring in each ear.
Personality
Even after his father took him away from his life of luxury on Mary Geoise, Doflamingo clung to his bloodline, believing he still had the rights to his origins, complaining that he did not want to live inside a run-down shack despite being hunted, and continued to resent his father, to this day, for taking him away from it all. Doflamingo's arrogance is a common trait among World Nobles. Hypocritically, he hates the World Nobles for rejecting him, but still follows their same attitudes and actions, despising others for being "human", while he considers his bloodline to be most noble. Doflamingo seems to live by the philosophy that the strong are the ones who make the rules and will be the only ones able to survive in the "New Age". Due to his belief in this "New Age", Doflamingo seems to lose interest in other things rather easily, such as when he removes the Bellamy Pirates from their services as slaves. He has also threatened to leave the Seven Warlords of the Sea if the World Government's orders are unsatisfactory or inconvenient to him, claiming that he never cared about the World Government. Despite being a believer in the "New Age" philosophy, Doflamingo, unlike his former subordinate, Bellamy, does seem to have an open opinion on dreams, though the dreams of others do not seem to interest him. Despite his belief, he does not seem to be opposed to becoming the Pirate King. While he seems to consider those weaker than him as mere pawns, rather than crewmates, he still holds some pride and a reduced sense of honor for his flag and despises the idea of those being defeated while using its symbol. While he does not mind weak people, he is not above pointing out their flaws.
personality
Despite his apathy towards the weak, he often seems to form alliances with promising newcomers. He formed an alliance with Bellamy very early in his travels. Unlike Bellamy, he himself seems to have an open mind about dreams, although he doesn't care much about them himself. Because he was lynched by a mob at the age of eight, forced to eat garbage to survive and subsist in deplorable conditions due to the citizens' hatred of the Celestial Dragons, he learned what pain and hunger were for the first time in his life. Such events left him with post-traumatic stress disorder, even until the age of twenty-five, causing him to have nightmares of torture and wake up cowardly and sweaty. To cope with it, he drank large amounts of alcohol. Like many other characters, he has a unique laugh: "Fuffuffuffuffuffuffu". Interestingly, when he laughs, his mouth is wide open.
Relationship
Blood Family: Doflamingo had strong ties to his family (especially his mother, considering how distraught he was after her death). He also cared for his father Homing and his brother Rosinante (before Homing renounced his World Noble title and Rosinante betrayed him), later killing them both and despising them. By his own request, Doflamingo forgave his father and brother when they died, believing that only by dying could they redeem themselves for him. Despite this, it has yet to be explained why he decided to reclaim the throne of Dressrosa.
Vergo: Vergo is described as the most efficient and trustworthy Marine officer under Donquixote Doflamingo, implying that there are other Marines loyal to him. Vergo also joined the Marines on Doflamingo's instructions. Vergo seems to follow any order without hesitation. A sign of the trust Doflamingo has in him is the fact that he gave him the mission to infiltrate the Marines and only Doflamingo knew of this confidential mission. He even went so far as to call him "buddy", demonstrating a great level of trust, even within his crew. After giving Monet the order to destroy the laboratory in Punk Hazard, Doflamingo contacted Vergo and apologized, thanking him for all the work he did for him.
Baby 5: Baby 5 holds a grudge against Donquixote Doflamingo to the point that she tried to kill him for killing her fiancés and destroying her cities; however, these attacks didn't seem to bother her. Later, Buffalo mentions that killing men who try to marry her is her way of showing affection for him, as she considers him like a little sister.
Subordinates
Bellamy Pirates: The Bellamy Pirates were subordinates of Donquixote Doflamingo who used his flag. Doflamingo, like the rest of the crew, believes in the New Age, but prefers to keep his opinions on other people's beliefs to himself. Doflamingo takes pride in his flag and when Bellamy is dishonored with his defeat at the hands of Monkey D. Luffy, he punishes him, and in turn, decides to discard the Bellamy Pirates to his side. Later, he gave Bellamy another chance, after arriving from Skypiea, by giving him one of the pillars of the Golden Bell. However, after his defeat at the Colosseum, he sent him to kill Luffy, knowing that he would fail so that Dellinger would kill him. After Bellamy went to him, he made clear their differences and then brutalized him and used him as a human shield, when Luffy attacked him and manipulated him, although he freed him from his control.
Disco: Disco is in charge of the Human Auction House, located in Grove One of the Sabaody Archipelago. When he was injured (in the anime, it was shown that Shalria shot him, when Disco told him not to harm Camie because she was sold), he called the shop's owner, Sea Warlord Donquixote Doflamingo, for help, but Doflamingo later told him that he could keep the shop, as he was no longer interested in it. Furthermore, the World Government had called him back for the Whitebeard War at Marineford.
The Seven Lords of the Sea Warrior
Crocodile: Doflamingo seems to know a lot of things about Crocodile, as they talk as if they have known each other for a long time. While Crocodile threatens to kill Doflamingo for meddling in his business and making fun of him, Doflamingo is willing to offer an alliance to take down Jozu. However, he laughs at Doflamingo's offer and attacks both Jozu and Crocodile. Later, Doflamingo decapitates Crocodile (which has no effect due to Crocodile possessing the power of the Lodge), saying that he will get jealous if Crocodile allies with Whitebeard and not him. Crocodile states that he is not affiliated with anyone and the two clash attacks.
Gecko Moria: Gecko Moria also did not have a good relationship with Doflamingo, as Doflamingo severed Oars Jr.'s foot, despite Moria wanting the giant intact. After the war, he got into a fight with Doflamingo, when Doflamingo was ordered to kill him. Moria was seen on the ground, bleeding, as Doflamingo laughed and told him that he was too weak to be a Warlord of the Sea and it would be better if they thought he died honorably in the war. When Moria questioned if Sengoku ordered his death, Doflamingo laughed and stated that it was a person of much higher rank. However, Doflamingo failed to carry out his order, as to his shock, Moria "disappeared" while on the verge of death.
Bartholomew Kuma: Although no interactions between Doflamingo and Kuma have been shown, Doflamingo appears to be aware of Kuma's modifications to the Pacifist Project, as he explained to Ivankov why his personality has changed. However, he does not appear to be aware of Kuma's involvement with the Revolutionary Army.
Allies
Caesar Clown: Doflamingo partners with Caesar Clown to produce SAD: the raw material for SMILE (artificial Devil Fruits that he sells on the black market). Caesar is supposed to inform him about his actions before they are committed, so that Doflamingo can take care of other details and avoid drawing attention to Punk Hazard, but Doflamingo distrusts Caesar and sends Monet to spy on him. Although, in the end, during the Dressrosa Arc, the Warlord of the Sea recognizes him as a direct subordinate and not an ally.
World Government: Despite being an ally of the World Government, it seems to care little about its relationship with them. During the meeting on Mary Geoise, it showed no respect for Fleet Admiral Sengoku. Furthermore, to kill boredom, Doflamingo used his body manipulation ability to make Mozambia and Stainless fight each other. The fight was soon stopped when Sengoku told Doflamingo to stop playing around. Having been the owner of the Auction House, he may have had some impact with his position, but apparently, not enough to lose his position as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. Furthermore, after the Whitebeard War, he also threatened to resign from his position as Warlord of the Sea if the orders given by the World Government are not satisfactory to his interests or if they annoy him, and that, from the beginning, he never cared about the World Government. It is also revealed by Law that he is an illegal broker (something unknown to the Government).
Kaidou: He is the Pirate Emperor who protects Doflamingo, since he is the one who owns the SMILE trade, on the black market. It is a business relationship: Doflamingo sells him the SMILE for his army of Zoan-type fruit consumers and he protects him, along with Caesar Clown, who produces the raw material to be able to generate them: the SAD.
Others
Edward Newgate: The main reason Doflamingo agreed to participate in the Marineford War was because he found it interesting and fun to watch the Marines fight the Whitebeard Pirates. He also wanted to see the World's Strongest Man in action, firsthand. Doflamingo was thrilled to see Whitebeard demonstrate his impressive power and acknowledged that he was worthy of being considered a legendary monster with superhuman strength. Unlike Dracule Mihawk, Doflamingo was not interested in testing his strength against Whitebeard and was content to simply see his power. Doflamingo deeply hates the World Nobles. This hatred was triggered by being rejected by them, even after bringing them his father's head, as they would never accept the son of a "traitor." After this, Doflamingo swore that he would destroy everything that belongs to them in the world. At some point, he discovered Mary Geoise's secret treasure and as they were unable to get rid of it, they eventually came to an agreement, allowing him to continue his influence as a world noble, in exchange for Doflamingo not revealing the existence of the sacred treasure to the world.
Skills and powers
Donquixote Doflamingo is one of the most powerful pirates to have appeared. Proof of this is that he belonged to the Seven Warlords of the Sea (one of the three great powers of the world). Because he knows about the national treasure of Mary Geoise, he was even able to deceive the world, making them believe that he had abdicated his throne in Dressrosa and abandoned his position as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea.
Physical abilities
He has displayed physical abilities of superhuman dexterity and speed, with excellent reaction time. He is physically strong, as demonstrated by slicing off Little Oars Jr.'s leg and stopping Jozu in his tracks (both well-known pirates from the New World). Another demonstration of his physical strength is that he was able to cut down the royal palace of Dressrosa with a single kick. Doflamingo has also displayed considerable hand-to-hand combat expertise, specializing in a kick-based style of combat, as he was able to deliver a single kick to his opponent, severely wounding them, and fluidly dodge their attack in an instant. Doflamingo has considerable reflexes and agility; He was able to dodge Oars Jr.'s attacks with relative ease and completely leapfrogged over Oars Jr.'s gigantic body. He was fast enough to escape through the eye of the sandstorm and emerge unscathed from Crocodile's attack. A testament to his power is that, from his first appearance in the series, up until the Dressrosa Arc, he had never once been injured by a character. This is noteworthy since he was present during the Marineford War (a war in which most of the stronger characters, such as Sengoku, ended up injured). He also proved to be strong enough to equally match Crocodile's uppercut with just his kicks. When Baby 5 attacked him, he easily dodged all of their attacks, and when he finally hit him with an explosive round, Doflamingo was unharmed and continued his conversation. He didn't even pay attention to her. He was able to block a Diable Jambe kick from Sanji with his knee, and blocked Sanji's subsequent barrage of kicks with his fully exposed arm. His leg strength allowed him to produce a wave of razor-sharp 360-degree strikes, enough to slice through all three of Dressrosa's palace towers almost instantly.
physical capacity
Kaku's Amane Dachi, but using only one leg and without the preparation spinning. He managed to avoid being completely frozen by Kuzan, as shortly after being frozen, he stopped the freezing by cutting through the ice with his Devil Fruit powers. Furthermore, he did not show any pain or discomfort in doing so. He took a Red Hawk to the stomach from Luffy (a move that caused Hody Jones, who had been powered up with Energy Steroids, to vomit blood). However, Law stated shortly afterward that the Red Hawk only inflicted superficial damage on the Warlord of the Sea. After taking a Gamma Knife from Law, which destroyed his organs, he was able to reattach them to continue fighting. He even continued fighting, while taking several Gear 2 attacks from Luffy that, according to Doflamingo, felt like tickling. Even after receiving numerous attacks from Luffy in his Gear 4 mode, which managed to send him flying through dozens of buildings and crash into a mountain, he was still able to fight and even control the power of his awakened Devil Fruit. Furthermore, despite being greatly exhausted and injured, Doflamingo was able to fight against dozens of powerful gladiators and defeat them all with little effort. He has also demonstrated great strength, managing to land a devastating dropkick on Luffy, despite the latter's defense with Haki. He is the only one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea known to have fought against another of his comrades (Gecko Moria), who was critically injured (though he was aided by a small group of Pacifistas and Moria was still recovering from his injuries caused by the Marineford War and by Luffy, on Thriller Bark). When he was ordered to finish off Moria, he was confident enough in his own strength to kill him.
physical capacity
He is so powerful that Law said that if Doflamingo resigns, the Marines will send their best fighters, the admirals, against him. His strength in the lower-ranking Marines was put to use when Doflamingo toyed with Vice Admirals Mozambia and Stainless, and then defeated Vice Admiral Smoker (both times with tremendous ease, proving that he has the ability to take down at least a Vice Admiral on Smoker's level (who is formidable as a Logia-type Devil Fruit user)). He is so strong that Law, a Supernova Warlord of the Sea, chose not to fight Doflamingo until he had enough energy to have a better chance. Doflamingo is fully aware of Haki, as he is known to be able to use all three types, and warned Caesar and Monet of Luffy's Haoshoku Haki, stating that he might be stronger than Law. In his fight against Law, he demonstrated that his power is such that he can defeat him with little to no setbacks. Aside from his combat skills, Doflamingo possesses great amounts of influence in the world, being a Warlord of the Sea and a famous pirate. He is also known as "Joker" in the Underworld, with the Bellamy Pirates under his command, as well as powerful subordinates Vice Admiral Vergo of the Navy and Monet, as well as Trafalgar Law, who is now a former fellow member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. He had installed Vergo in the Navy as a spy, thus having a trusted and convenient marine under his command. Doflamingo also partners with the former World Government scientist Caesar Clown, but distrusted him and placed Monet as an undercover agent, to monitor his actions.
physical capacity
Furthermore, Doflamingo was the owner of the Auction House in the Sabaody Archipelago, but gave it to Disco when he lost interest in the slave trade in favor of the Marineford War and the New Era, and his abandonment of the Auction House caused that house to fall into ruin, demonstrating the power of his influence (and the consequences of lacking it). He has a large number of contacts, as he was able to acquire the reborn Mera Mera no Mi. He is well-versed in psychological warfare: when he was preparing to use the fruit as bait to break up Luffy and Law's alliance, due to the belief that Luffy would never allow anyone else to have it. Which proved to be true, after learning that his brother's no Mi was being offered as the grand prize in the Corrida Colosseum tournament, Luffy immediately entered the tournament to try and win it. This shows Doflamingo's understanding of other personalities. He also used his influence to falsify his renunciation of his title as Warlord of the Sea, in order to trap his enemies. After Sugar's defeat, he partially regained control of Dressrosa, turning everyone against his enemies with a monetary reward and a chance at survival, demonstrating extensive strategic preparation.
Devil fruit
Doflamingo ate the Ito Ito no Mi: a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that grants him the ability to create and manipulate web-like threads. Doflamingo is so proficient in this ability that he has even been able to "awaken" it, causing his surroundings to transform into threads. In an emergency, Doflamingo can use his threads to repair his internal organs as a way to stave off the worst effects, though it is not a true healing or regeneration.
Haki
Main article: Haki Doflamingo is one of the few people capable of using all three types of Haki.
Kenbunshoku Haki Main article: Kenbunshoku haki Doflamingo can use Kenbunshoku Haki, because he managed to control a large part of the people of Dressrosa with his Devil Fruit, so he must have a considerable level in this type of Haki.
Busoshoku Haki Main article: Busoshoku Haki He can also use Busoshoku Haki, having been able to defeat Smoker (a user of a Logia-type fruit). In his battle against Luffy, he demonstrates mastery of this type of Haki, even hardening various parts of his body, such as his torso and hand. His Haki is powerful enough to withstand blows from Luffy in Gear 2.
Haoshoku Haki Main article: Haoshoku haki Doflamingo is capable of using Haoshoku Haki, with which he managed to knock out many of the G-5 members.
Arms
Doflamingo used a common flintlock pistol with several golden decorations to shoot Trafalgar Law three times in succession on Dressrosa. The pistol was loaded with lead ammunition, infecting Law with lead poison, and as a mocking reference to Law's past with Amber Lead Syndrome. When he murdered his father, he used a regular pistol. Ten years ago, he was also seen using a sword, nearly executing King Riku Dold III.
history
Past/From Heaven to Hell: Doflamingo is a descendant of one of the royal families that formed the World Government and relocated to Mary Geoise. However, his father chose to give up being a World Noble and live a normal life with his wife and two children. Doflamingo was accustomed to his old lifestyle as a Heavenly Dragon, and resented his father for giving up his World Noble title. Even though his father gave up his World Noble status, the people who tried to live among them resented him due to their history of hatred towards World Nobles. When Doflamingo was eight years old, the townspeople eventually attacked them and burned down their mansion, driving the Donquixote family to live in a makeshift well on a scrap heap. After a time, Doflamingo lost his mother to an illness, believing that his family's new, deplorable lifestyle was the cause.
history
Birth of the Heavenly Demon: Eventually, the townspeople could no longer contain their anger towards the World Nobles, and attacked Doflamingo, Rosinante, and Homing. The three were lynched and severely beaten, but ultimately survived when Doflamingo awakened his Haoshoku Haki. The memory of this experience would stay with Doflamingo for many years. He later killed his father at the age of ten. He returned to Mary Geoise with his father's head in an attempt to regain his former power as a World Noble, but was rejected for coming from a "family of traitors." From then on, he began his life as a pirate, at one point swearing revenge on the Heavenly Dragons for rejecting him. Doflamingo managed to flee Mary Geoise with knowledge of the Heavenly Dragons' national treasure, allowing him to blackmail his former countrymen into granting him the same rights he lost. After this, Doflamingo met with Vergo, Trebol, Pica, and Diamante. Trebol offered him power to achieve his revenge, and the four swore their loyalty to Doflamingo, seeing his potential.
Curiosities
•Doflamingo's Jolly Roger appears to be based on SMILE, which is created with SAD, because "smile" means "Smile" in English, and its symbol is a smiling face with a diagonal line crossing it.
•In SBS 76, Oda draws the Seven Warlords of the Sea, before the timeskip, with their genders swapped. Doflamingo appears with his hair slicked back and saying, "Picnic cake, right away."
•Doflamingo has some very notable parallels with Crocodile:
Both have been Warlords of the Sea.
Both are/were leaders of a large-scale criminal organization with several Devil Fruit users.
Both operated under the guise of recognized local heroes in their respective countries, engaging in shady dealings that contributed to the deterioration of those nations.
Crocodile was the main antagonist of the second saga of part 1 (Alabasta Saga), while Doflamingo was the main antagonist of the second saga of part 2 (Pirate Alliance Saga).
Both are Devil Fruit users and have mastered their powers to high levels.
Both of them use coats as their common clothes.
Both were present at Roger's execution.
Both smuggle illegal substances (Dance Powder and SAD)
Both acted cruelly towards subordinates they considered useless and unworthy of their military powers (Crocodile discarded Galdino and Doflamingo discarded Bellamy).
Both attempted genocide in the respective countries they were trying to control, both failing.
Both were attacked in a way that would have decapitated them if they didn't have their Devil Fruit powers, managing to avoid the damage completely (Vivi attacked Crocodile with her Peacock Blade, but it dissipated into the sand. Kyros appeared to have severed Doflamingo's head with his sword, but he had switched places with a clone made of threads).
curiosities
•Doflamingo has some very notable parallels with Crocodile:
Both were defeated by Luffy in a manner that wreaked havoc on the nearby residential areas where they had fought (Crocodile was defeated at a temple containing a Poneglyph, causing the road and some above it to be split in two. Doflamingo was sent crashing into the ground with such force that it leveled all the surrounding buildings).
Both were stripped of their respective titles as Warlords of the Sea and taken to Impel Down, along with part of their organization.
Curiosities taken from "SBS"
•Doflamingo's favorite food is lobster and his favorite is barbecue (it's related to his past).
Extra (mine)
•Doflamingo has a bit of diabetes and only Rosinante knows it.
•Her favorite dessert is pudding, cake, and donuts, although these give her diabetes, she can eat them sometimes.
•He likes to drink sake... But if he drinks too much he gets drunk
•He likes to play the guitar
• When he sleeps he looks like an Angel in the eyes of anyone (even a child)
•when she blushes her glasses fall off
•When he gets upset with his brother or something else and his brother does something cute, Doflamingo can't be angry because for him his brother is like a cinnamon roll
•When he and his brother were attacked by the people after no longer being World Nobles, in an act of protecting Rosinante, Doflamingo got in the middle of an attack and received it in his left eye (it was left with a scar and he can barely see well), causing it to hurt every time he uses his King's Haki.
•Since he was a child, Doflamingo has been afraid of thunder.
•Only he can call Rocinante Rosy or Heart
•Let his brother call him Doffy or Oni-chan
