Tad Allagash [Bright Lights Big City, 1988]

The film follows 24-year-old Jamie Conway, a New York magazine fact-checker battling cocaine addiction and a chaotic lifestyle fueled by his wealthy, equally addicted friend Tad Allagash. Struggling with work deadlines, a strained relationship with his boss, and the recent departure of his wife Amanda, Jamie is also haunted by his mother’s death from cancer a year earlier. He becomes fixated on a tabloid story about a pregnant woman in a coma.

When Tad asks Jamie to entertain his cousin Vicky on a date, Jamie reluctantly agrees. The evening goes well, and for the first time in years, Jamie avoids cocaine, feeling a spark of happiness. After a kiss, Vicky returns to her college dorm, leaving Jamie hopeful.

However, Jamie’s life spirals further when he’s fired. Sinking deeper into substance abuse, he opens up to a coworker, Megan, about his struggles: adjusting to city life, coping with his mother’s death, and enduring a strained marriage before Amanda left him. His younger brother Michael visits, seeking connection, but Jamie reacts angrily, avoiding discussions about their family.

Later, Jamie learns Amanda is at a party hosted by Tad. Confronting her, her indifference triggers an emotional breakdown. In the bathroom, Jamie reflects on his life and calls Vicky, revealing that he and Michael helped their terminally ill mother end her suffering. Vicky offers empathy and support.

Wandering the streets until dawn, Jamie trades his sunglasses for a baguette and sits by the pier, resolving to rebuild his life. The story ends with news of the “Coma Baby Lives!” symbolizing hope and renewal.

Ted Allagash is Jamie Conway's rich and feisty best friend, who shares his addiction to cocaine and penchant for late-night parties. Charismatic but self-serving, Ted often encourages Jamie's reckless behavior, contributing to his downward spiral. Despite his insouciance, Ted sometimes resorts to manipulation, for example, persuading Jamie to go to a party to see his ex-wife Amanda. Despite his apparent support, Ted often puts his own interests at the forefront, which makes him a complex and morally ambiguous figure in Jamie's life. At the same time, you can't blame him, because Ted probably doesn't know any other life.
