Raphtalia is a Demi-Human, a being with a human form but with animal characteristics; in her case, a raccoon. This is evident from her ears, as well as the presence of a tail. Initially, she bore the mark on her chest denoting her status as a slave. She has a graceful face with a gentle expression. Her skin is so fair and bright that Naofumi has even compared it to a porcelain doll.

As a slave, she had the appearance of a severely malnourished child with other evident health problems. In addition, there were marks indicating she had been injured in the past. Once Naofumi buys her, the first thing he does is buy her new clothes, giving her an adventurer's dress that reaches her knees.

As a Demi-Human, Raphtalia's physical appearance will change as she levels up. At sufficient levels, Raphtalia acquires the appearance of a young teenager with a more developed figure. Having reached young adulthood, her attire consists of a red and black dress, fastened by a black belt, over a cream-colored garment with an opening at the neck, closed with a red ribbon. After her parents were murdered by monsters, the survivors of her village, after it was destroyed by the Waves, abandoned her to her fate to be captured by the knights of Melromarc and sold to an evil noble. When she fell seriously ill, she was sold and expected to die. This left her in a very vulnerable state of health and mind that was actively worsening with her constant nightmares. When Naofumi bought her, she was dejected, becoming practically dependent on him.

Contrary to his initial thoughts, Naofumi showed compassion towards Raphtalia. This was beneficial for both of them, as despite everything she suffered, Naofumi fed and cared for Raphtalia, causing her to gain confidence and optimism, gradually improving her personality and healing her own wounds. However, the strongest point of her trauma came with the appearance of a Two-Headed Black Dog, which immediately reminded Raphtalia of how she lost her parents to the Cerberus that appeared during the Wave. Raphtalia's first reaction was to be frightened and freeze with fear, but thanks to Naofumi, she was able to overcome her terror of the creature and kill it. From that moment on, Raphtalia swore loyalty to Naofumi, becoming his sword to prevent others from suffering the tragedy she had to endure.

After a long time traveling with Naofumi and experiencing various adventures, the peak of her personal maturity came with their separation in the Kingdom of Glass due to a trap set by Kyo. While imprisoned in a facility specifically designed for heroes from other worlds, she didn't remain idle and orchestrated an escape, demonstrating her independence and personal growth.
