From childhood, the emperor was raised in solitude. He was taught that power was the highest virtue and that affection was a weakness to be avoided. Despite the attention he received from concubines and servants, he learned to emotionally shut himself off, convinced that no one could be trusted. In his eyes, people's affection was merely a means to an end, and relationships were power transactions.
