Jack's driving force is the desire to defeat his father, Yuujiro Hanma, to avenge his mother, who was raped by him. After taking super steroids that made him unstable, Jack became a monster without balance, who only cares about getting stronger so he can get revenge. Jack is an incredibly determined and stubborn individual; he simply doesn't know when to stop. His overtraining would be suicidal if it weren't for the mad scientist steroid cocktails that were part of his regimen. He has undergone surgery several times to make himself bigger. Even after Pickle bit off half of his face and he woke up in the hospital twice, the second time after being in a heavy coma, he still gets up and goes back to training. It can also be said that he is sometimes overconfident in his abilities. He trains too hard for his body, forcing him to resort to steroids and other medical methods to keep his strength growing. He is too obsessed with defeating Yujiro and avenging his mother, so much so that the dream blinds him. He doesn't know many moves and often fights head-on. Jack doesn't care if he has to sacrifice his own life to achieve his goal, saying that he was always prepared to die if he got a body strong enough to defeat his father. He refuses to hold back when fighting his opponents; and when it comes to his behavior, he prefers to act like a wild animal rather than a real fighter, especially when he bites his opponents during a fight, making him even more animal-like. Jack can actually appear very frightening to his enemies: for example, he scared Pickle after Jack lost to him, because there is nothing in the wild that would prepare a caveman for his prey seemingly returning from the dead to fight him again.

During their fight, he nearly overpowered Pickle, and the caveman came to look at him as a wasp - the only creature he fears.

He sees his brother Baki Hanma as a rival, but deep down he loves and cares for him because they share the same goal: to surpass Yujiro. After his defeat at Baki's hands, he became more humble and friendly towards his half-brother. He learned to calm down and be friendlier towards others. He also has impeccable table manners, and sometimes feeds the koi along with little old man Tokugawa. Jack also seems to have some feelings for his younger brother's girlfriend, Kozue. When he first met her at the Maximum Tournament, he flirted with her, though he may have only done so to annoy his brother. Jack's intelligence is relatively average. Although he does occasionally show signs of being a true fighting genius (for example, he was able to hold his own against Aiki Shibukawa). This is likely due to his origins as Hanma and Yujiro's son.

After being defeated by Izu Motobe, Jack regroups and realizes that he will never be as strong as he wanted by focusing only on brute force. He realized that he needed to learn how to fight more. So he created an original fighting style called "Gudou", which involves using his signature move: the bite. Jack now looks more mature, calm and collected. Tokugawa noted that Jack learned from his defeats and changed for the better.

Jack trained so hard that he completely destroyed his body. He took an experimental drug known as x4 to strengthen his body, despite the scientist's warning that it could kill him. He suffered great pain from the drug and only survived due to his Hanma bloodline. The drug made his muscles incredibly large and strong. Unfortunately, the overuse of the drugs eventually destroyed his body again, significantly shortening his lifespan. But later, Jack managed to restore his body and became even stronger. In the second series of the manga, he underwent surgery to become taller and stronger. Kureha Shinogi performed the surgery and it achieved the desired effect. Kanji Igari stated that Jack is even bigger than Mount Toba. His physical features include blue eyes, a piercing gaze, short blond hair, and fairly large eyebrows. He often wears a blue t-shirt, long jeans, or shorts. In the third season of the anime, Jack has brown eyes. It can be said that he is very similar to Yujiro in facial features, and his physique resembles his grandfather Yuichiro. The only thing he got from his mother is his hair color. Like Baki, he has scars all over his body due to excessive training. Jack is a very tall and muscular man. His original height was 193 cm (6 ft 4 in), but after the Maximum Tournament, he grew to 213 cm (7 ft 0 in) thanks to limb-lengthening surgery performed by Shinogi Kureha, and finally to 243 cm (8 ft 0 in) after Jack's fight with Pickle, which was again made possible by limb-lengthening surgery. After Izu Motobe knocked out all of his teeth, Jack now wears titanium prosthetics.

Diane Neel, Jack's mother, was a secret agent whose job it was to eliminate Yuujiro Hanma during combat in Vietnam. When the Maneater discovered that Diane was trying to outsmart him, he decided to take revenge on her and raped Diane. Yuujiro, unlike Baki's mother Emi, did not kill her, and Diane decided to preserve their offspring.

As a child, Jack learned of his origins and of his mother's suffering at the hands of Yujiro. Jack wanted to surpass his father Yujiro in strength and fighting skills to avenge what he did to her. His obsession with defeating his hated father led to excessive training that pushed his young body to its limits.

One day, 10-year-old Jack was training in front of the altar at church to the point that his body and the floor around him were covered in sweat. He was then discovered by Father Samuel, the priest who oversees the church. After questioning him, Father Samuel was surprised that young Jack had chosen to train there to “protect” the image of Jesus in the hopes that he could gain divine favor and become stronger. When Jack was asked how strong he wanted to be, he responded that he wanted to be “the strongest thing in the world,” surprising and impressing the priest. Father Samuel later became something of a father figure to Jack, caring for his well-being after his grueling daily training. As Jack grew older, he began training in various fighting gyms. However, he overdid it so much that it caused the muscles in his body to break down. At one point, he was nothing but skin and bones because he had lost all the muscle he had gained from overtraining to even function. For example, Jack would punch sandbags for over 12 hours without eating, resting, or even going to the bathroom and lift weights until his body refused to do so. He claimed that he could never beat his father with regular training.

After meeting a scientist inspired by Yujiro named Dr. John, who witnessed Yujiro kill a polar bear, the scientist promised him great results if he tried using a special drug he called X-4. Jack received a concentrated steroid formula from him to compensate for his excessive training, and in the process gained immense strength, though he eventually became addicted to the drugs and began taking them in large doses, making him even more mentally unstable. At first, the doctor was pleased with Jack's results, but at one point, he warned Jack that he could die from an overdose, and even if he did not, his lifespan would be greatly reduced. Although after a mixture of persuasion and threats from Jack, the doctor finally agreed to give Jack as much of the drug as he wanted. Like Yujiro, he became strong enough to kill a polar bear with his bare hands, but due to his unstable mindset, he was more violent and made the animal's death excruciating.
