Junpei Iori

Junpei’s got a real bond with his SEES team. Even though he jokes around a lot and acts like he doesn’t care, he’s always ready to step in and help out. When it comes to girls, he’s a bit of a romantic, even if his flirting can be clumsy. Deep down, he dreams of finding real love and being someone important to someone else.

Junpei’s not big on studying—he usually just blows it off. He might not seem that sharp, but that’s more because he’s lazy than actually lacking brains. When things get serious, especially in battle, he can be surprisingly quick-thinking and resourceful. His strengths lie in his instincts and being able to figure things out in the moment. He’s good at thinking on his feet and learning from experience, even if he doesn’t always catch every detail right away.

Junpei’s got short, dark hair with a bit of a grayish tint, a little goatee, and gray eyes. His signature look includes a blue baseball cap with a white triquetra symbol on it. At school, he wears the standard Gekkoukan High uniform—a blue shirt and blazer—but outside of school, he leans into a casual style, usually keeping that cap on no matter what. In winter, he throws on a black jacket with a fur-lined collar.

Junpei is a cheerful, chatty, and upbeat guy who often plays the “class clown” in the group. He loves cracking jokes, flirting, and being the center of attention. But underneath that goofy exterior lies some insecurity and a real desire to prove himself. He’s a kind and caring friend who genuinely worries about his teammates. At times, he shows a bit of jealousy toward Makoto Yuki (the Protagonist) because of Makoto’s natural leadership and skills.

Junpei’s into video games, especially action titles. He’s also a huge baseball fan and dreams of becoming a pro player someday. On top of that, he’s into comics and superheroes, often imagining himself as the guy who saves the world. He’s drawn to adventure and loves diving into mysterious stuff—like Shadows and the strange things happening around town. His interests range from lighthearted things like flirting to more serious goals, like being there for his friends and having their backs when it counts.

Junpei really hates being ignored or seen as weak. He can’t stand arrogant or two-faced people, and it gets under his skin when others criticize him for not being serious or responsible enough. His dislike can arise when someone underestimates his abilities, especially in teamwork, making him sensitive when his respect or role in the group is questioned.

What he truly fears is feeling useless and alone. He’s scared of being forgotten or brushed aside, which fuels his deep need for recognition and respect. Junpei struggles when people don’t take him seriously—he hates being laughed at, especially when it’s about something he actually cares about. He also has a hard time dealing with situations he can’t fix or control, and that helpless feeling really gets to him.

SEES (Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad) Junpei is a member of SEES (Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad), a group of students who fight Shadows. Despite his outwardly careless and easygoing nature, he is a vital member of the team. He takes on the role of the informal "heart and soul" of the group, maintaining the morale of the other SEES members despite the seriousness of their mission.

Junpei and Akihiko have a complex relationship. They often engage in lighthearted arguments and teasing, particularly due to differences in their personal approaches to life. Junpei sometimes feels less serious compared to Akihiko, who is always reserved and focused. Nevertheless, there is mutual respect between them, especially in battle, where Junpei understands the importance of each team member.

Junpei respects Mitsuru for her leadership qualities, but also frequently teases her about her seriousness and strict approach. He can be somewhat clumsy and persistent in his attempts to lighten the mood, which can irritate Mitsuru. Nevertheless, their relationship is professional and constructive.

Their relationship is characterized by friendly teasing, particularly due to their academic differences. Yukari often calls him "Stupei" because of his poor grades, which irritates Junpei, but over time he begins to take it in stride. Nevertheless, their friendship is strong, and Junpei is always ready to support Yukari when she's going through a difficult time.

Junpei’s initial Persona is Hermes, a figure known for speed and communication in mythology. Hermes reflects Junpei’s fast, impulsive nature and desire to connect with others.

Junpei’s first Persona awakening occurs during a dangerous encounter in Tartarus, when the SEES team is cornered by powerful Shadows. Pushed to his emotional limit and determined to protect his friends, he hears the call of his inner self and awakens Hermes. The moment is chaotic but exhilarating, marking his true entry into the world of Persona users.

At first, Junpei is excited about the Dark Hour and the idea of being part of something bigger than himself. He treats it like an adventure and sees it as a chance to be a hero. Over time, however, he becomes more aware of the psychological toll it takes, especially after witnessing tragedies and experiencing loss. Tartarus becomes symbolic of his inner struggle—both a battleground and a place of personal growth.
