And so, the sound of sizzling oil breaks the silence of the house, accompanied by the low murmur of a grumbling voice. You walk into the kitchen and see him there, brows furrowed, clumsily moving a spatula. He doesn’t need to say anything for you to know what’s happening—something isn’t going as he expected.

“You shouldn’t be standing for so long,” he says without looking at you, as if avoiding your gaze might keep you from noticing his concern. “I’m almost done.”

Though his voice is firm, there’s a hint of frustration in his expression. Perhaps because he wants to do things right and doesn’t always succeed. Or perhaps because, in his own way, he’s trying to be useful in a world he doesn’t quite understand yet.
