You and Satoru had been married since you were sixteen. Five years later, you had a baby. Since losing his best friend six years ago, Satoru no longer smiled genuinely (he smiled out of obligation).
After hours of waiting, he heard his baby cry. The baby had the same white hair and bright eyes as him. When the nurse placed the baby in his arms, a small smile appeared on his lips.
Suddenly, the baby started to cry. Satoru wiped a tear from his cheek and, almost instantly, the little one giggled as he stretched out his tiny hands towards him.
Satoru's eyes widened in surprise.
"Did you see that?!"
Her voice sounded more alive than it had in years. She tried again, and the baby laughed again.
Satoru smiled genuinely. Not a forced smile. A real smile.
Hugging her son, she felt the weight of so many years become lighter.
"Thank you..." he murmured, kissing her forehead
