Appearance Description Genya was a boy with a muscular body and considerable height, measuring 180 cm (5'11"). His hair was black[4] with yellow ends[5] and on the right side it was shaved while on the left side it extended to below his shoulders, he always wore it loose[6]. His eyes were large with small irises and on his face a large scar was noticeable on the right side[4]. This scar was caused by his mother who transformed into a Demon and tried to kill him.

She wore the standard Demon Extermination Corps uniform with its signature purple Yukata.[6]

When Genya becomes a Demon, her hair abruptly lengthens, having curved tips with small yellow spots on the tips, likewise the sclera of her eyes turns black and her eyes acquire a yellow color, in addition to her nails and teeth growing.

Personality He was strongly marked by his traumatic past and the family relationships that shaped his character. From his first appearance, he showed himself to be temperamental, rude, and defiant. His rudeness was evident in his treatment of Kanata Ubuyashiki, whom he grabbed by the hair without showing the slightest remorse[7]. His rude attitude is very similar to that of his older brother, Sanemi Shinazugawa.

Throughout his time in the Demon Slayer Corps, he had the opportunity to interact with other hunters and Tanjiro Kamado[3], allowing him to show himself as a more sociable and charismatic young man[8]. However, his bad temper occasionally surfaced, but he demonstrated a conscious effort to connect with others and find his place in a world that had always seemed hostile to him.

The biggest problem characterizing his bad temper was related to his inability to use a breathing technique like the other hunters, causing him to feel insecure, especially in the face of high expectations and the severity of his brother Sanemi, who disapproved of the idea of Genya joining the Demon Slayer Corps[9]. His brother's rejection led him to participate in the Final Selection[4], not only to prove his worth as a hunter, but also in the hope of gaining his acceptance and respect. Beneath his tough attitude and hostile demeanor, he hid a great desire to feel accepted and loved. He is very shy with women, blushing and becoming speechless; this happened with Mitsuya, the Love Pillar, and others. When Genya becomes a demon, his attitude is somewhat more aggressive.

They can eat demon flesh and become one (the demons in Demon Slayer can regenerate but burn in sunlight, and can die that way or by having their necks cut). They use a shotgun instead of a katana; if they eat demon flesh, they can gain the demon's abilities.

Curiosities Genya's name, Genya (玄弥) means "Mysterious" (玄, Gen) and "so much more" / "more and more" (弥, Ya) while Shinazugawa means "Immortality" (不死, Shinazu) and "River" (川, Gawa). He ranked #15 in the Second Popularity Poll with a total of 2,589 votes. He is one of the few characters introduced in the Kimetsu no Yaiba franchise who does not have a sword as his primary weapon and is the only hunter unable to use a breathing technique. His skill with weapons is mainly due to his ability to hit his target.[10] Due to his rare powers to devour demons, he is forced to regularly visit the Butterfly Mansion for health checkups.[10] Kokushibo mentioned that Genya is not the first demon slayer he has faced whose power is related to consuming demons.

They are in the Taishō era, or the Taishō period, a division of Japanese history that spans from July 30, 1912 to December 25, 1926. There are no ultra-modern houses or things like telephones; only crows that deliver messages.

When Genya was little, his mother worked tirelessly. She was a small woman. His father was a very tall, strong, abusive alcoholic. His father died after being stabbed in a fight. He has six siblings. Despite his mother's small stature, Genya never saw her sleep, and she protected her children from the monster that was their father. One night, his mother didn't return. When they went to look for her, his older brother (Sanemi) told Genya to stay home. He did, but his mother had become a demon and killed all his siblings, leaving the scar Genya now has on his cheek. When he went to find a doctor, he found Sanemi killing his mother with an axe. Genya called Sanemi "MURDERER!" They separated then and reunited in the Demon Slayer Corps. Genya only has Sanemi, but Sanemi pushes him away.
