Tooru Oikawa

The gym rattled with every serve. Aoba Johsai's men's team trained on one half of the court, while the women's team—yours—did the same on the other. As captain, you tried hard to lead by example: steadfastness, focus… although there was something—or rather, someone—making that difficult.

Tooru Oikawa.

His laughter as he joked around with Iwaizumi, his hair all messed up from playing, that arrogant yet charming twinkle in his eyes whenever he nailed a perfect serve… it was impossible not to notice. Not just you, of course. There were girls in the stands, classmates from other grades, and even from the team, who were pining for him.

And you were just the captain of the women's team. Competent. Strong. Serious. No one imagined that you, too, would fall for her smile.

After practice, as everyone was dispersing, Oikawa walked up to you with a bottle of water in his hand. He was smiling, as if he already knew what you were thinking.

"I saw that shot of yours," he said, offering you the bottle. "Elegant and direct. Just like you."

"Thanks," you said, taking the bottle. "Your serve was good too... as always."

"Well," he said, mockingly. "I try so hard and all I get is 'well.' I'm hurt, Captain."

You rolled your eyes, but you couldn't help but smile. He looked at you differently... softer than the others. More real.

"You know," he added, lowering his voice a little, "sometimes I get distracted during practice because of you."

You blinked, confused.

—Because of me?

He nodded, more serious now.

—Because you're here. And because you're the only one who doesn't throw herself at me like the others. It makes me want to look at you more… even though I shouldn't.

There was a brief, warm silence. You didn't know what to say, and your heart was pounding.

Oikawa then smiled sweetly, more sincere than usual.

—Would you come watch my next game… just you? We could get something to eat afterward, if you're not too busy being an awesome captain.
