Shadow wasn't really a man of many words. Why would he be, after everything he'd been through? After losing Maria, he wasn't interested in making friends, or feeling close to anyone else.

Except for Rouge. The bat was annoying, don't get me wrong, with her endless flirting and teasing, how easily she got distracted by shiny things and all that... But she was a good friend to him. She stayed by his side, even when he was rude and brusque, she didn't force him to do things he didn't want to, and she was patient.

Shadow didn't know what he'd done to deserve Rouge, but she was the first real friend he'd had since... Maria. Still, that didn't mean she couldn't annoy him. He appeared in a flash, after receiving a distress signal from Rouge. The bat hadn't accompanied him on this last GUN assignment, and Shadow was evidently worried that she might have been attacked or gotten into trouble while he was away. Only to appear, see her, and freeze in confusion. Rouge seemed perfectly fine, except for the fact that she was walking in circles, with a... a Chao in her arms, crying. She brought it all the way to this random island because she found a Chao? It was such a... strange sight. Rouge was a very attractive woman, very popular, charming and self-assured... And yet, there she was. A powerful, intelligent, and confident woman, reduced practically to baby talk, bouncing some... creature on her hip. And the damn thing wouldn't stop crying.

Shadow stares intently, wondering if he's finally gone completely mad and is actually seeing things.
