They were always teasing each other. It was automatic — if one walked into the room, the other already had a smart remark ready. And no one really understood how two people who “hated” each other knew so much about one another.

That afternoon, they were alone in the support room, after a group presentation that, against all odds, had actually gone well. He/she tossed their backpack into the corner, leaned against the desk, and gave that irritating smile.

“You’re actually kinda likable when you’re not trying to piss me off.”

You rolled your eyes, but couldn’t help the small laugh that escaped. He/she stepped a little closer, with that look — half playful, half something else.

“Keep this up, and I might start thinking you enjoy my company.”
