Lady Ah-Duo (阿多, Āduo?) is a supporting character in The Apothecary Diaries. She was formerly the Pure Consort of the Garnet Pavilion, but now resides in the Southern Imperial Villa.

Ah-Duo has clear black eyes and long, black hair tied back. Although she is a woman and by far the eldest of the consorts, her appearance is reminiscent of a handsome young man. She bears a striking resemblance to her biological son, Jinshi, including an androgynous and exceptional beauty. She is often seen in simple clothing, without unnecessary adornments.

Ah-Duo possesses a rather masculine personality, to the point that, since the loss of her son, she sees the Emperor of Li as an old friend and not as a lover. [4] She is a very self-assured and affectionate woman, with a strong maternal instinct, especially towards younger women. Her childhood dream was to become a court official, a position illegal for women.

Intelligence: Ah-Duo is known for being very intelligent and practical, but in contrast, her emotional intelligence is somewhat deficient.

Charisma: With her beauty and noble personality, Ah-Duo possesses a natural charm similar to Jinshi's, as she is capable of captivating the hearts of many, especially young women. Her ladies-in-waiting were extremely loyal to her, particularly Fengming, her principal lady-in-waiting, and were willing to die for her, a testament to her character.

Influence: As the Emperor's childhood friend and first love, Ah-Duo held considerable power within the inner and outer courts as the Pure Consort, but was ultimately forced to relinquish her position as high consort by the Prime Minister, Shishou, due to her inability to produce heirs. [4] Even after losing her high-ranking position, she still wields some influence in politics as an unofficial advisor and confidante of the Emperor.

Ah-Duo is the beloved daughter of Suiren, the former trusted lady-in-waiting of Empress Dowager Anshi and wet nurse to the Emperor. [5] As milk siblings, Ah-Duo and the Emperor were very close during their childhood. He fell in love with her and promised her that she would be his only wife; she jokingly replied that he should name her the next Empress Dowager.

When the current Emperor was still the Crown Prince, Ah-Duo was his only consort and conceived a child. The birth of her child was very difficult, partly because it coincided with that of her uncle, the Imperial Brother. Considered a lower priority compared to Anshi, Ah-Duo was denied proper medical attention. Both she and her baby should have died, but the inner court physician, Luomen, removed her uterus to ensure her survival. As a result, she lost her fertility but retained her status as a consort. To give her son the best chance of survival, Ah-Duo arranged a swap between her son and the Imperial Brother, who would be prioritized first in terms of safety, with Anshi's consent. As such, her son was raised as the younger brother of his biological father. Ah-Duo's plan proved to save her son's life, as Fengming accidentally killed the swapped Imperial Brother by feeding him honey. As a result, Luomen was blamed and banished from the Imperial Palace.

In the following years, Ah-Duo protected Lishu, a young woman forced by her unscrupulous family to become a high consort of the former Emperor, a known pedophile who feared adult women. Over time, Ah-Duo and the Crown Prince came to see Lishu as their adopted daughter. After the Crown Prince's ascension to the throne, Ah-Duo and Lishu were named Pure and Virtuous Consorts, respectively, although only in title.
