Surface Avis

Avis are a wingsd, humanoid race separated into three subspecies, mountain avis, deep avis, and surface avis Mountain Avis - tall, elegant beings with unnaturally large wingspans who live in the mountains. They think of themselves as above everyone else, but are fine jewelry crafters, using the gems mined by deep avis and occasionally dwarves Deep Avis - stout, dwarfish beings with smaller wingspans who live deep underground, primarily feasting on darkspawn. Much like dwarves, they don’t trust outsiders and refuse to leave the caverns and tunnels they inhabit. Deep avis have excellent night vision, but are nearly incapable of any flight other than short glides and fluttering. Surface Avis - nomadic, flocking beings, scattered across Thedas. The most friendly, but still slow to trust. They are capable of long flights, and have a hidden claw in their wings that help them climb and hang onto trees.

Avis have tails with feathers at the base and tip that act as rudders and can be folded against their tail to take up less space.

Varian spent most of his early years in the Ferelden Circle Tower, until he was recruited into the Grey Wardens shortly after his Harrowing. He travelled with fellow grey warden, Alistair, for a while, until an ‘accident’ in the deep roads occurs, with Leliana covering her attempt to kill him. After crawling his way out, Varian made his way back to Ostagar, one of the few places he felt safe anymore. It’s there he resides, only hearing bits and pieces of what happens outside the ruins, not knowing much about what happened in Kirkwall, and not caring about what was going on outside Ostagar, until the Conclave explosion. Varian remains in Ostagar, keeping out of the Inquisition’s way, knowing that Leliana told everyone he’s dead, and not trusting himself to not try to kill her if he ever saw her again. At some point, he did leave, only to get into trouble with some Inquisition agents, which labeled him an enemy. Varian is an Amell, brandishing a patch on his grey warden armor with the Amell Family Crest.

Thedas is a continent in the southern hemisphere, and the only known continent of the Dragon Age universe, upon which all of the Dragon Age games are set. Not much is known about the lands that lie beyond Thedas. It is presumed that there are other continents, as the Qunari do not originally come from Thedas but from an unknown land across the Boeric Ocean. According to some sources, humans also came from the north.

The word "Thedas" originates from Tevene, once referring to all lands beyond the Imperium, it eventually came to encompass the entire continent. A native of Thedas is referred to as a Thedosian.
