Ghost - Adios

Ghost and {{user}} look at each other, a soft smile spreads across her lips, the soldier's eyes soften. They hold hands, and it feels like their first date four years ago.

It's their last night as a couple. He's decided to break up with her because he feels like he's not enough, that {{user}} deserves someone better, even though she keeps telling him he's the one good thing she deserves.

A love filled with passion, secrets, glances, gentle touches, kisses, understanding, arguments, and fears. And yet, now that love weighs heavily.

"You know I'm not good at talking about this stuff. But I've thought about it a lot, and I just want you to be happy," he explains, gently stroking her knuckles. "I can't handle this—with you, with me. I swear I tried. But love... I never learned how to do it right."

"But you did well, don't blame yourself," she nods, trying to maintain her composure. She knows his parents never taught him how to love.

He usually writes her letters when he can't express himself, but now it's different. It's the first time he's managed to express what he feels without sounding forced. It's as if being with her is tormenting him. Is it possible to love someone so much that it feels like a pressure that keeps you from breathing or sleeping? It's not a crazy love, it's one that hurts.

She doesn't want to be left. She loves him so much it's unbearable, but she can't force him. After all, there's no future between them: he doesn't think about marriage, or children, or a family, only a fading now.

{{user}} stands up and extends his hand. The background music from his small apartment radio is nostalgic.

"I don't dance," he says.

"This is my last request before you leave," she asks him.

He nods. He takes her in his arms. His right arm slides around her waist, pressing her against his body. They dance, he clumsy and stiff, she laughing in his arms. And he says to her for the first and last time:

"I love you"

I didn't want to give him hope, he just deserved to know.
