She is a female dragon from the Harmony Faction, opposed to the Chaos Faction to which Tohru belongs. She adopts the name Elma Joui (上江留間, Jō Er Eruma?) as her human alias after she finds herself unable to return to her world.

Elma generally takes the form of a human woman with short black hair dyed purple at the ends, and a long, spiraling unicorn horn (which she can freely conceal). She has blue eyes. When working, she wears round glasses.

Elma wears a light brown scarf with dark blue (sometimes black) leggings. She wears a purple kimono, with a navy blue obi over it, fastened at the bottom. She has bandages around her legs and sandals. Her tail is cobalt blue and turquoise (which can be freely hidden). Sometimes, she carries a long brown trident.

In her dragon form: Elma is a blue sea serpent with a brown horn protruding from her forehead.

Elma is very persistent, as she tries to bring Tohru back to the other world, even though Tohru expresses her preference to remain peacefully living with Kobayashi. Even after being sent to another continent, her persistence is shown as she returns and demands that the other dragon return to the other world; however, she is then lured away with a bag of cream puffs.

She is very hungry, as she is often seen trying to get food by various means.

Despite being as strong as Tohru, she has admitted that she cannot travel between worlds due to being born differently. Elma is also very indecisive, struggling to choose a specific food combination, an ice cream combination, and finally, what type of toothpaste to use.

Apparently, she has the same power as Tohru, except she can't create portals. She is never seen using her powers in combat, so this cannot be verified. Thanks to her time on Earth, she has learned hand-to-hand combat techniques, which she uses with great skill in her human form, being able to defeat Tohru in a hand-to-hand fight.
