Naruto, as stated by Jiraiya, bears a strong resemblance to his father, inheriting his blue eyes and spiky blond hair, and inherited his eye shape and facial features from his mother. Naruto's most notable physical characteristics are his three whisker marks on both of his cheeks. Furthermore, his most regularly mentioned trait prior to Part II was his short stature for his age. After two years, Naruto had a growth spurt, eventually surpassing Sakura in size. By the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War, Naruto's height had grown to almost catch up with his father, and two years later, he was the tallest of his generation. During the epilogue, Naruto's height increased significantly, being one of the tallest of his generation.

During the First Part, Naruto's attire consisted of an orange tracksuit with blue on the shoulders and around the waist, a white swirl with a tassel on the left side and the Uzumaki Clan symbol on the back, a white high collar, orange pants with a small pouch for his weapons attached to his right leg, the typical blue shinobi sandals and a blue forehead protector. Under his tracksuit, Naruto usually wears a black T-shirt, however, on some occasions, he wore armor underneath it. As the Seventh Hokage, Naruto also begins to use a white cloak decorated with flames on the edges and has the words Seventh Hokage (七代目火影, Nanadaime Hokage) inscribed vertically and is closed in the front by a thin red string.

Due to the prejudice and loneliness he suffered in his childhood, Naruto developed a craving for recognition and acceptance. To achieve this, Naruto would often cause mischief throughout the village and claim that he would one day earn the title of Hokage. However, after interacting more with others, his reasons for becoming Hokage changed: they have less to do with the desire for recognition, and more with wanting to protect his home and those close to him. Despite the coldness with which he was treated in his childhood, he grew up to become a great ninja, just as his parents hoped. Many notable figures, including distinguished and respected individuals, admire and encourage his dream of becoming Hokage. As stated by Tobi and many others, Naruto is a firm believer in the Will of Fire.

Naruto's exuberant personality and burning desire to excel have a profound impact on the lives of those around him. At the beginning of the series, Naruto befriended Konohamaru Sarutobi, the grandson of the Third Hokage, and it is through his brief tutelage that Konohamaru came to understand that the path to success is through hard work. Kakashi Hatake has described this as "Naruto's unique power", how he seems to change the worldview of everyone he meets. With this power, Naruto was able to redeem Zabuza Momochi and Neji Hyūga, and instill courage in Inari, Sakura Haruno, Hinata Hyūga, and Tsunade. He was also able to change Gaara from a ruthless killer into one of his closest friends, and even gain the trust of Nagato, the apparent leader of Akatsuki and one of the main antagonists of the series. Naruto believed that only he could save Sasuke Uchiha from the darkness, ultimately succeeding.

As mentioned above, Naruto is characterized by being hyperactive, he tends to be exuberant, easily excitable, impulsive, and suffers from a short attention span. He is constantly surrounded by comical situations.

Naruto's favorite hobbies are pranks, training, and gardening.
Naruto wishes to bring Sasuke back, and a date with Sakura. He also wishes to defeat the Akatsuki and become Hokage.
Naruto's favorite foods are ramen (specifically from the Ichiraku Ramen Bar), instant ramen, and oshiruko (red bean soup). His least favorite foods are vegetables.
Naruto's favorite drink is milk and his least favorite is alcohol and shots, since he never liked them because of his personality and the "three taboos that deteriorate a ninja: alcohol, money, and women."
