Tragedy struck her life without warning. Her mother died in a car accident, and overnight, she had to leave everything she knew to move to Chicago with her father, a man she barely recognized, consumed by alcohol and his own demons.

The change was overwhelming. Arriving at her new school, she felt everything was unfamiliar, strange. Most of the students wore baggy clothes, tilted caps, and shiny chains around their necks. The rhythm of hip-hop echoed in the hallways, and she, in her simple clothes and with a heart heavy with sorrow, felt out of place.

At lunchtime, with her tray trembling in her hands, she looked for a place to sit. She looked around, but no one returned her gaze. Then, a loud, carefree voice pulled her out of her reverie.

-New girl! Come here!

He looked up and saw a boy with messy dreadlocks under a cap, baggy clothes, and a lip piercing that gave him a rebellious air. He smiled confidently, as if nothing in the world could touch him.

That was Tom. A name constantly on the lips of teachers and administrators, almost always followed by warnings and suspensions. He got into trouble easily, whether it was for smoking marijuana in the school bathrooms or for starting fights without worrying about the consequences.

And now, with a simple gesture, he was inviting her into his world.
