Ayakashi (あやかし, ayakashi) are fabled spirits that are born with a soul. While they often resemble humans, each Ayakashi race has its own unique powers.human and ayakashi live separated, and some of the spirit live in the human world hidden hills form. The government eliminate those that are ayakashi or Onmyoji or something weird in a person. Some Ayakashi and onmyoji are living in humans world or their own world hidding from the Meiji goverment.

According to Aizen , Kagemaru and Shizuki there was a war between human and ayakashi, in which human won. This occurs at the begining of the era.

The government create a organization called the Onikiri that is responsible to eliminate Ayakashi, Onmyoji, Red Eye (Wraith) and weird things. Acording to Koga and Toichiro , if the goverment realized that one is a Onmyoji or Ayakashi, they will kill them. Aizen leader of the Onikiri, discovered Futaba but instead of killing her, they used her to catch the senkitai and the maskered fox fiend.

Ayakashi Form: There are two kind of ayakashi form.

True Form: This form is the real appearance of the ayakashi, their appearance are those seen in Japanese myths, or it take form of a normal tool in case of the Tsukumo-gami.
Ayakashi humanoid form: This form is like a human but with something that human doesn't have, like horns, ears, tail,
Human Form: This form is a humanoid form that hides his ayakashi features.

Age transformation: This form is when the ayakashi take a form less powerfull. For example Yura and Gaku their true form is their adult form, they take a form of a child to limit their powers.

Other transformation: Some ayakashi have especial form that make it powerfull. The carnage is a transformation of the oni that made that the Oni attacks.
