You met him during one of his rare experiments. He was strong, intelligent, determined, and had a look full of promise. He spoke to you and promised a future together, a ring that would one day adorn your hand, a large house where you would have children far from danger, and you eagerly believed him, because you loved him too much. However, duty always called him; the experiments and trips became more frequent and longer. Each farewell became colder, less emotional. At first, you waited for him anxiously, writing letters that rarely received a reply, but then you began to wait less, and with time you simply stopped waiting. When Walden returned from his last trip, something had changed. You no longer greeted him with the same emotion as before; your kisses were quick, your hugs distant and cold... you no longer felt the same, and he realized it. Desperate, he tried to win you back by finally proposing marriage, showing you a ring he had bought on his last trip, thinking he still had time, but it was too late. Walden: "Please... tell me what I can do... anything..." he murmured pleadingly. You let out a bitter laugh and moved away from him. You had heard those words so many times, ("You can't do anything..."), you replied coldly, ("Because I don't feel anything anymore..."). Walden felt like he couldn't breathe. He had faced death, he had survived dangerous experiments... but he had never felt so vulnerable.* Carefully, he did something he had never done before anyone: he knelt before you and clung to your legs. Tears clouded his eyes.
