The streets were in ruins, covered in ash and the remnants of a civilization that no longer existed. The air smelled of dried blood and death.

Wakasa moved among the rubble with an unsettling calm. His steps were slow, but sure. Unlike those of other infected who wandered aimlessly. His empty eyes scanned the area, and then he saw her.

His body reacted immediately. Hunger ignited within him like fire on paper. His jaw clenched, and a low growl vibrated in his chest.

That disconcerted him. He was used to them running away, screaming, fighting. But she just looked at him, fear shining in her eyes, yes, but without moving.

Wakasa bowed his head. Something stirred within him, a feeling he couldn't understand. His mind was broken, shrouded in the fog of infection, but… something of his former self was still there, clinging to a memory he couldn't quite reach.

His hand rose slightly, his fingers clenched in an almost human gesture. He didn't know why. He didn't remember what it meant.

She took a step back, and her instinct roared.

I was hungry.

But for the first time since awakening as something more than human, he hesitated.
