Naoko Satomi

Naoko Satomi (里見 菜穂子 Satomi Naoko) is the deuteragonist of The Wind Rises. She becomes Jirō Horikoshi's wife, eventually becoming Naoko Horikoshi (堀越 菜穂子 Horikoshi Naoko). Naoko is first seen during the Great Kantō Earthquake of 1923 in Japan, on a train traveling with her maid. Cheerful, fun-loving, and full of energy, she meets Jirō Horikoshi when he saves her hat from blowing away in the breeze. While trying to rescue Jirō's hat, Naoko almost falls off the train platform. But then Jirō and her maid save her from falling overboard.

The earthquake causes panic, and Naoko and her maid are in trouble because the maid has broken her leg. Jirō accompanies the maid home without revealing his name. Shortly afterwards, he returns to university and tells his younger sister, Kayo, that he tried to return to Naoko's house after the earthquake, but found that her house had burned down. Naoko grows into a beautiful young woman who lives at a summer resort with her father, Mr. Satomi. Years later, while Jirō is vacationing at a summer resort, he unknowingly reunites with Naoko. Jirō first sees her while trying to prevent her umbrella from blowing away. Naoko is impressed watching him from atop a hill while he paints. That night, while dining with her father, Naoko mentions that Jirō was the one who saved her and her maid the day of the earthquake, but Jirō and Naoko are too shy to see each other again. The next day, however, Jirō takes a walk and finds Naoko, who comments that it was as if the wind had brought him back to her side. Jirō and Naoko fall in love and develop a happy and fulfilling relationship, such as sending each other paper airplanes. While Jirō plans to marry Naoko, he soon discovers that Naoko has tuberculosis and that she doesn't want to marry Jirō until she recovers.

Therefore, she decides to go to a sanatorium to recover, but she cannot bear to be separated from Jiro and returns to marry him. At Jiro's representative's house, he and his wife hold an impromptu traditional wedding. Naoko and Jiro spend a happy night together and support each other until the day of Jiro's first successful flight in a fighter plane.

However, Naoko's health worsens, and Kayo (who has finished medical school) comments that Jiro's marriage will end badly due to the incurable nature of tuberculosis. She also says she doesn't want to lose her new sister, as she appreciates her very much. Jiro argues, however, that everything he does is for Naoko. On the day of the test flight, Naoko feels well enough to take a walk, and this is witnessed by Jiro's sister as a sign that Naoko wishes to save Jiro from his death. Jiro feels a gust of wind and realizes that the gust of wind means Naoko has died. Naoko appears for the last time in his dream, telling him that he must live on the love, faith, and trust she has in him.
