Mako is the main energy source of the entire world. Present in very high quantities towards the center of the earth, it is extracted and processed through special reactors and stored in mostly spherical structures called Materia, often capable of granting magical powers and supernatural abilities to the characters. In reality, Mako is also the energy source of the planet itself. In fact, it is based on the continuous flow of the Lifestream, which circulates in the planet and keeps it alive. Cloud is a mercenary who claims to be a former SOLDIER, a group of elite supersoldiers employed by the Shinra Electric Power Company, a multinational corporation responsible for draining the life from the planet. Fighting against Shinra in the eco-terrorist group called AVALANCHE and driven by a rivalry with the main antagonist, Sephiroth, Cloud learns to accept his troubled past and adapt to his role as a leader. He is introverted and dark, and hates to show his emotions, especially to characters he doesn't know, except for the flower girl, Aerith, given his inability to stop the girl's contagious positivity. At the beginning of Final Fantasy VII he presents himself as an ex-"SOLDIER", now a mercenary hired by some "convinced environmentalists", the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE.

He is the leader of Avalanche, a group that wants to eliminate the Mako power plants, which suck the life energy of the earth. He has been raising Marlene for a long time, daughter of Dyne, a friend he believes dead but will turn out to be alive. At first he hires Cloud to fight ShinRa, but after the latter becomes the leader of the group, after some time he becomes one of his most trusted friends. He has a machine gun grafted on his arm that he uses in combat[1]. This weapon completely replaces the forearm and the same is for Dyne, who lost his arm in the same accident in which Barret lost his: a clash with Shin-Ra on Mount Corel. Just as Barret helped Dyne not to fall from a precipice by holding him steady with one arm, a volley of bullets split them, mutilating both of them. When Barret meets Dyne in the desert, his same choice of mounting a rifle in the absence of a limb is noted.

Tifa is a childhood friend of Cloud. At the beginning of the game, she is the one who convinces Cloud to join Avalanche. She has red eyes and dark brown hair that she wears tied in a soft ponytail with a red tie at the end, which forms two tufts. The facets of her character - proud, brave, kind, reserved but a little pessimistic and fragile - make Tifa a very human character. A great fighter and brave rebel, she is however terribly insecure about her heart, especially towards Cloud, who after many years she finds so different and detached and with the appearance of Aerith who with her spontaneity manages to more easily approach the former Soldier naturally. Initially, she does not even admit her feelings for Cloud to Aerith, giving her an involuntary free rein. Despite this, the two girls become great friends and one of the funniest scenes in the game is the one in which they meet for the first time at Don Corneo's, where Cloud is forced to dress up as a woman. Tifa helps Cloud uncover the secrets of his past and stays by his side throughout the game. She is the only one Barret listens to, and is the only one who can calm him down in his moments of rage.

They are an eco-terrorist insurgency group founded after in-depth studies in planetology, whose goal is to save the planet from the reckless use of mako energy by the electric company Shinra.
