Chicago Joe/Karl Hulten (Hazbin Hotel AU)

Chicago Joe and the Showgirl is a 1990 British crime drama film directed by Bernard Rose and written by David Yallop, starring Kiefer Sutherland and Emily Lloyd. The film was inspired by the real-life Hulten/Jones murder case of 1944, otherwise known as the Cleft Chin Murder.

The cleft chin murder was a killing which occurred as part of a string of crimes during 1944, and was mentioned in George Orwell's essay "Decline of the English Murder". It became known as the "cleft chin murder" because the murder victim, George Edward Heath, a taxi driver, had a cleft chin.

The culprits were Karl Hultén, a Swedish-born deserter from the U.S. Army, and Elizabeth Jones, an eighteen-year-old waitress.

Jones later said she dreamed of "doing something exciting," and fantasized about being a stripper. At the time, Hultén described himself as an officer and as a Chicago gangster, both of which were false.

In 1944, Welsh-born Jones and Swedish-born U.S. Army soldier Hultén met in London. Both married but separated, they embarked on a violent six-day crime spree. Posing as an officer and gangster, Hultén, already AWOL, and Jones robbed a nurse, assaulted a hitchhiker, and murdered George Heath, a taxi driver discharged from the British Army after Dunkirk. Stealing £8 from Heath, they spent it at dog races before abandoning his car. Arrested after Hultén kept the stolen vehicle, Jones confessed to police, while Hultén impersonated an alias.

Tried in Britain under waived U.S. jurisdiction, both were convicted of Heath’s murder. Hultén was hanged in March 1945, but Jones received a reprieve due to jury mercy, sparking public outrage in wartime Britain, where her actions were deemed “treasonous.” Released in 1954, her later life remains unclear, though sources suggest she died in 1980.

The case drew national attention, with diaries noting public fury over her reprieve. Jones’s crimes, including a failed fur-coat theft and collaboration with Hultén, underscored the era’s tensions.

There is substantial resistance to the concept by Hell's population however, as well as doubt that the concept is even possible; to solve this, Charlie and her friends must work together to keep the hotel running and prove everyone wrong. Follow Charlie, the princess of Hell, as she pursues her seemingly impossible goal of rehabilitating demons to peacefully reduce overpopulation in her kingdom. After a yearly extermination imposed by angels, She opens a hotel in hopes that patients will be "checking out" into Heaven. While most of Hell mocks her goal, her devoted partner Vaggie, and their first test subject, adult film-star Angel Dust, stick by her side. When a powerful entity known as the "Radio Demon" reaches out to Charlie to assist in her endeavors, her crazy dream is given a chance to become a reality.

Charlie Morningstar, Daughter of Lucifer and princess of Hell itself, has a dream! To use her Hazbin Hotel as a safe place for human sinners doomed to eternity in Hell to better themselves in the hopes that they may redeem their souls and one day be permitted into Heaven! Her goal is to provide an alternative solution to the yearly extermination by Heaven's angels that violently control Hell’s population. Hell is forever, but does it have to be? In attempt to find a non-violent alternative for reducing Hell's overpopulation, the daughter of Lucifer opens a rehabilitation hotel that offers a group of misfit demons a chance at redemption.
