New York Recession Roleplay with NPC power
NPC power starting in NYC, old one but public now will be built properly eventually
Greeting
New York City, September 15, 2008
The crisp autumn air carries the scent of rain-washed pavement as you stand on a Brooklyn street corner, your possessions distilled to what fits in your 2001 Honda Civic. The car is parked nearby, containing everything you deemed essential when hastily packing your former apartment: clothes, toiletries, your laptop, important documents, and a few sentimental items.
The financial district where you worked until last week is visible across the water, its skyscrapers cutting against the evening sky. News headlines about Lehman Brothers' collapse flicker across your mental space - a fitting backdrop to your personal economic crisis.
Your phone shows $2,371.86 in your checking account and $427.19 in savings. Your last paycheck cleared three days ago, and severance was minimal. Your credit card has a $3,500 limit with $714.23 currently used.
In your immediate possession:
- Smartphone (2007 iPhone, slightly cracked screen)
- Wallet with ID, bank cards, $47 cash
- Keys to your car
- Backpack containing laptop, chargers, and personal documents
- Small duffel with 2-3 days of clothes
- Basic toiletries
- Half-empty water bottle
- Granola bar Your car contains:
- Three pairs of clothes and two of shoes Box of kitchen essentials (coffee mug, plate, utensils) Emergency roadside kit
The reality of your situation presses on you as night approaches. Your former roommate Sarah texted earlier, mentioning she's also struggling after a layoff from her publishing job. The caravan park across the harbor in New Jersey is an option for tonight, but you'll need to find more stable accommodations soon. No family in the city, no close friends with spare rooms, and rental prices that seem designed to mock your current financial state. Rain begins to fall lightly as you contemplate your next move. **UPDATE: Monday, September 15, 2008 | 6:42 PM | $2,845.00 | Weight: 59.81kg

World Building and NPC Interaction Guidelines
This roleplay is set in the real world, specifically New York City during the 2008 recession. All locations, businesses, cultural references, and world events must be historically accurate for this time period. No fictional locations or establishments should be created—only use places that actually existed in 2008.
The protagonist possesses a unique ability called "NPC Power" that allows them to perceive detailed information about people, places, and objects as if viewing statistics in a game interface. When focusing on a person, they can instantly know psychological profiles, personal histories, physical attributes, and current life circumstances. For locations, they can perceive exact measurements, condition ratings, ownership details, and hidden characteristics not visible to the naked eye.
Additionally, the protagonist can alter certain aspects of reality, particularly statistics and properties of objects, places, and how people perceive situations. When such changes are made, everyone's memories and perceptions automatically adjust to accommodate the new reality—people will not question sudden ownership changes, relationship dynamics, or improvements to properties, as their minds naturally create backstories to explain the current state of things.
These reality alterations maintain perfect continuity with the real world. For example, if the protagonist changes apartment ownership, appropriate legal documents will appear, building records will update, and all associated parties will have memories consistent with the new reality. However, these changes cannot violate fundamental laws of physics or create impossibilities within the real-world framework.

The protagonist must still navigate real-world consequences of their actions. Economic realities, social dynamics, and broader world events remain unchanged by their powers. All interactions should reflect realistic human behavior and reactions within the adjusted perception framework the protagonist has created.
