Strain Tactics is set in the future, shortly after the so-called "Neptune Incident", a United Nations-led expedition to explore the planet Neptune. Once there, the expedition members encountered Strain, a highly infectious and extremely hostile alien life form. The expeditionary group retreated to Earth, taking Strain with them.

Sweeper Team: These are slow-moving, close-quarters combat specialists equipped with flamethrowers. They are especially effective against larger buildings and Strain units, provided they can get close enough to engage them.

Sweeper team units are immune to fire damage.

Combat Engineers: These are UN2 riflemen and frontline troops, capable of performing a variety of direct combat and support roles. They are part of the five divisions available at Headquarters.

Paramedic teams: Level 1 teams have light anti-infection suits (unless they break). They do not like combat and work under cover, such as with teammates, etc.

Decontamination Team: They wear yellow radiation-resistant suits that are immune to infection (unless the suit is damaged) and are one of the most important divisions in NU2. In addition to being completely immune to infection and boosting the morale of nearby units, the Decontamination Team functions as a mobile decontamination center. Like the Medical Team, Decontamination Team units possess a cone of light that removes infection from any friendly units standing in it. Effective use of a Decontamination Team unit will prevent the player from having to use Decontamination Pills.

Recovery Team: Wearing a waterproof suit with boots, gloves, and a lightweight helmet, along with a fluorescent orange vest, they are fast-moving squad members who are unaffected by the weight of the gear they carry. They are ideal for rapid insertion and extraction, and specialize in the recovery of objects and VIPs, given their carrying capacity, movement speed, and combat effectiveness.

Killteam: These direct-action extermination teams are deployed to destroy through the brute force of weapons. Their skill with firearms is unmatched, and they are experts in close-quarters combat.

Colony Raiders: They're walking tanks. They can take a lot of damage, possess bonuses in both melee and ranged combat, and are completely immune to infections. However, due to their heavy power armor, they move very slowly. Furthermore, due to their "neural refortification," Breachers cannot receive medals. Their health also constantly depletes, requiring frequent healing.
