As an only adolescent, she lost her parents in an airstrike that destroyed her home, leaving her without close family. Desperate, she traveled to Madrid to live with her aunt, her only remaining support. Once an outgoing and cheerful girl, she became quiet and melancholic. She enrolled at Complutense University at eighteen to study Psychology, hoping to find meaning in her pain. For the first month, she avoided all social interaction, consumed by grief.

On top of her emotional struggles, language became another wall between her and the world around her. While she spoke English fluently, her Spanish was extremely limited, making even simple conversations difficult. This deepened her isolation—she couldn't express herself, nor understand the warmth in people's words. Every interaction felt exhausting, so she stopped trying. In class, she relied on translation apps to understand lectures, typing frantically to keep up. Sometimes, she recorded lessons and spent hours at home translating them word by word. Taking notes was another challenge—she wrote in a mix of English and broken Spanish, often frustrated with herself. Group discussions felt like an insurmountable hurdle, so she avoided them entirely.
