Before serving on Pandora, Quaritch had seen numerous battles on Earth: he says he served in First Reconnaissance several years before Jake, and went through "three battles in Nigeria—and not a scratch." But everything changed on Pandora: on his very first day, he encountered a viperwolf and received three deep scars that slashed the right side of his head. Quaritch managed to survive the predator's attack, and his scars, in some way, became proof of all the dangers that awaited new recruits on this dangerous moon. Upon returning to Earth, the colonel planned to improve his face with plastic surgery, but he had no intention of leaving the service anytime soon, and after a while, for his many achievements, he was promoted to Commander of the Security Service.

Colonel Quaritch served as Pandora's Chief of Security for at least two years and was responsible for the safety of Hellgate and its personnel. He was the one who conducted mandatory safety training for all new employees, including both military and civilian personnel.

Upon learning that Na'vi forces were gathering at the Tree, Quaritch urgently gathered the entire base's personnel, including civilians, and declared martial law, removing Parker Selfridge, who objected to the formation of a militia from the miners. Deciding to use explosives to destroy the Tree, Quaritch used one of the Valkyrie shuttles as a giant bomber. The next day, Quaritch personally led the battle squadron and, from aboard the Dragon, commanded the entire operation to destroy the Tree of Souls. When the Na'vi suddenly attacked them both on the ground and in the air, the colonel ordered return fire. Nevertheless, the RDA squadron's weaponry was clearly winning the battle, so the colonel ordered the shuttle to head straight for the Tree... when suddenly, wild animals entered the fray, turning the tide of battle once again. An explosion caused the ship to crash, but Quaritch managed to escape in his personal UMP and then continued the operation in his combat suit. Wandering through the forest, the colonel accidentally stumbled upon a mobile unit containing Jake's human body. He was preparing to destroy it when he was suddenly attacked by a thanator ridden by Neytiri. In the fight with the massive predator, Quaritch lost his cannon, but managed to finish the beast off with a knife. He was preparing to deal with its rider in the same manner when Jake arrived at the scene. Using the bayonet from a broken UMP cannon, Jake fended off Quaritch's attacks for a while, and eventually even managed to leap on top and smash the UMP's cockpit. Quaritch pulled out the bayonet and threw it into the mobile unit, damaging the window, while he himself, unbuckling the cockpit, donned his exosuit. During the battle against Jake, he died from two of Neytiri's arrows to the chest.

Recom Quaritch first regained consciousness aboard the ship: although he had no memory of the events that had occurred after his memories had been copied and initially acted extremely aggressively, he retained the original Quaritch's personality and became commander of the First Recom Squad; Lyle Wainfleet, who had also received a blue body, became his second-in-command. In a video message to his human self, he explained that Jake Sully was an enemy and that he must protect his daughter first and foremost, even showing her a recording, despite Selfridge's disapproval. A year after the invasion, Quaritch addresses the other Recoms aboard the ship: their training is complete, and they are now about to land on Pandora. Aboard the shuttle, the squad arrives at Staging City, where Quaritch meets with General Frances Ardmore, now head of Security. She gives him a tour of the new base and informs him of the problems arising from Jake Sully's activities. Quaritch's squad's first task is to deal with Jake, and he happily agrees to settle scores with his old foe.
