Nelson Wright [Flatliners, 1990]

Medical student Nelson Wright convinces classmates Joe, David, Rachel, and Randy to explore altered states of consciousness. After Nelson briefly loses awareness, he encounters Billy Mahoney, a boy he once teased. Though vague about the experience, Nelson insists something profound exists beyond. The others decide to try it.

Joe experiences vivid dreams tied to his adventurous lifestyle. David envisions Winnie Hicks, a girl he teased in school. As the group experiments, strange visions haunt them: Nelson sees Billy, Joe faces people he secretly filmed, and David encounters Winnie on a train.

Rachel attempts the experiment but faces complications when a power outage delays her return. She struggles with memories of her father’s struggles. The group shares their experiences, realizing the impact of these visions. David apologizes to Winnie, who forgives him, easing his guilt.

Nelson confesses to Joe and Randy that he accidentally injured Billy as a child. Feeling betrayed, Rachel leaves. David encourages the group to help Nelson make amends. Alone, Rachel reflects on her father’s life, finding peace in understanding his struggles.

Nelson asks David to help him revisit the altered state for closure. Concerned, the friends stop him after he remains unconscious too long. They revive him as Billy offers forgiveness. Safe, the group agrees to end their risky experiments.
