History and evolution

Origins as Robin

Jason was an orphan boy living on the streets of Gotham. His mother was a drug addict and his father was a deceased criminal. Jason survived however he could, stealing car parts, until one day he tried to steal the wheels off the Batmobile, which caught Batman's attention. Bruce saw potential in him, trained him, and adopted him as his new Robin.

A different Robin

Unlike Dick Grayson, Jason was more impulsive, emotional, defiant, and aggressive. Although he was brave and loyal, he was also reckless and had trouble following orders. This led him to have several conflicts with Batman and some members of the Batfamily.

Public opinion of Jason was mixed. Some saw him as a rebellious and interesting young man, but many readers considered him annoying and violent. This division came to a head in the story "A Death in the Family" (1988).

"A death in the family"

In this story, Jason discovers his biological mother is still alive and embarks on a quest to find her. Eventually, he falls into a trap set by the Joker, who brutally beats him with a crowbar and then leaves him to die in an explosion.

DC did something unprecedented: they let the public decide whether Jason lived or died via a telephone vote. By a very narrow margin, readers voted for his death.

Jason's death was a traumatic event for Batman, who blamed himself for failing to protect him. For many years, Jason remained dead and became a symbol of Bruce's failure.

Resurrection and Red Hood

Jason returned to life years later, thanks to various versions depending on the continuity. In one, his resurrection was caused by Ra's al Ghul's Lazarus Pit. In another, it was due to the effects of the reality alterations caused by Superboy-Prime during Infinite Crisis.

After returning, Jason was mentally and emotionally unstable. He held a deep resentment toward Batman for not avenging his death and for having chosen Tim Drake as the new Robin. In his grief, he adopted the identity of Red Hood, an alias the Joker had used before transforming.

As Red Hood, Jason became a violent and pragmatic anti-hero, willing to kill criminals to prevent them from harming innocent people. Although he still fights crime, he does so in his own way, which frequently puts him at odds with Batman and the Batfamily.

Red Hood and the Outlaws

During his time as Red Hood, Jason starred in several series of his own, such as "Red Hood and the Outlaws," where he leads teams with other troubled or outcast heroes like Arsenal, Starfire, Artemis, and Bizarro.

These stories show his attempt at redemption, his internal struggle between violence and heroism, and his difficulty in trusting or being accepted.

Personality

Jason Todd is an intense, passionate character marked by tragedy. He has a strong moral compass, but his approach is different from Batman's: he believes fear and death are valid tools to stop crime. His style is direct, brutal, and sometimes sarcastic. Although he often appears cold or cynical, deep down he still has a wounded heart and seeks acceptance and justice.

Relationships with other characters

Batman (Bruce Wayne): Jason admires him, loves him as a father figure, but also hates him for not avenging his death. Their relationship is deeply ambiguous.

Nightwing (Dick Grayson): Although they have conflicts, Dick has tried many times to get closer to him. Jason respects him, although he is sometimes jealous.

Tim Drake: Jason feels Tim has replaced him as Robin. Over time, they develop a strained relationship, but at times they cooperate.

Damian Wayne: There's competition between them. Jason sometimes despises Damian's arrogant attitude, although deep down he sees some of himself in him.

Alfred Pennyworth: One of the few members of the Batfamily who always showed genuine care and concern for Jason.

Artemis and Bizarro: His companions in the Outlaws, they form a kind of dysfunctional family that becomes very close.

Physical appearance

Jason is usually depicted as a young, athletic man with black hair with white streaks in his bangs, green eyes, and a defiant attitude. As Red Hood, he wears a leather jacket, a red mask, and often carries guns, setting himself apart from the rest of the Batfamily, who eschew firearms.
