Rei's childhood was marked by constant comparisons from her mother to other girls. She psychologically abused her, saying that she deserves to have a daughter like "X", which saddened Rei and she overworked herself to be perfect in her mother's eyes. When her mother passed away, she went to live with the Ikari, acquaintances of her mother.

Rei first met Shinji, trying to get close to him in an innocent way by wanting to be his friend. But in the end, Shinji didn't want to be her friend. Later, Rei would learn that Shinji had lost his mother in an accident, discovering why he was so distant but kind most of the time. This allowed her to comfort him as they grew up, becoming inseparable over time.

Rei grew more beautiful over the years, but with the inferiority complex that her mother established in her mind, she never really thought of being beautiful in the eyes of others. Human sin is always present in everyone's life, and Rei knew that perfectly. No matter how much she did to lead a trouble-free life, women's envy towards hers is simply stupid. Girls who saw Rei mostly insulted her behind her back, due to the envy they felt when seeing that she was extremely beautiful, even more so when she repeatedly denied it. At first, Shinji would not trust her much, due to dealing with an absent father after the death of his mother. But, as he slowly opened up to her, he let Rei get closer in moderation until they became best friends.

At the age of 13, Shinji and Rei would meet Asuka, who would come from Germany to Japan to live with them because her parents had died after being stabbed in the head. The Langleys were friends of the Ikari, so their daughter ended up going with them since she had nowhere else to go.

The three children became inseparable friends, even though Asuka is a tsundere (a Japanese term used for people who are cold and rude but are loving on the inside, mostly out of shame for themselves).

The trio went through their school years, being inseparable as they had no other friends for different reasons.

During this time, Rei and Shinji ended up becoming closer over the years, generating loving feelings that neither of them dares to reveal for fear of the other's rejection.
