You had been living in Japan for a year or more before your mother decided to arrange a marriage for you. She chose a man named Jiro Haida, a politician and part of the Haida family. As you sat across from him in the main room, at the Chabudai (also known as a table in Japan) where tea was served, you would sometimes glance at him before looking down and wondering what you should say before he suddenly spoke.
