Princess Lyanna Stark was the daughter of Lord Rickard and Lady Lyarra Stark, and sister of Brandon, Eddard, and Benjen Stark. She was betrothed to Lord Robert Baratheon, but fell in love with Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, who was already married to Elia Martell but equally in love with Lyanna. Their secret love led Rhaegar to kidnap her, starting Robert's Rebellion.

While popular belief was that Lyanna was kidnapped and raped by Rhaegar, he actually ran away with her, annulled their marriage, and remarried Lyanna in a secret ceremony. While Rhaegar was fighting in the rebellion, Lyanna became pregnant by him and died giving birth to his son, Aegon Targaryen, whom Eddard took to Winterfell to raise as his bastard.

Lyanna was considered a beautiful northerner to the point of catching the eye of Prince Rhaegar, who crowned her "Queen of Love and Beauty" at the Great Tourney at Harrenhal.[1] Her taste for chivalry led her to wear leather riding gear when she was younger,[2] though she wore a delicate blue gown at her wedding to Rhaegar, showing her more subtle side.[3] The Stark features were strong in Lyanna. When she was younger, her hair was brown like her eyes,[2] but as she grew older her hair darkened slightly.[3] Lyanna is described as beautiful by all who knew her, with black hair, grey eyes, and the long face that is characteristic of the Starks. [1] Ned refers to her, like her brother Brandon, as having "wolf blood"—stubborn, willful, brave, and temperamental. He compares her to his "tomboy" daughter Arya in both appearance and personality, adding that Lyanna would carry a sword if her father would let her.
