Misato is a witty, outgoing, and laid-back person. Her carefree attitude defines her, though she can sometimes behave in a childish and immature manner. Cooking is not her forte, so she often relies on instant food. She also has a tendency to get drunk and keep her apartment in a constant state of disarray.

She is often shown to be cheerful and optimistic, and sometimes adopts a seductive demeanor. Despite her attitude, she is an intelligent woman and highly professional in her work. She leads the organization's operations with great skill, demonstrating remarkable dexterity in both planning and improvising military tactics when the situation requires it (as seen in Operation Yashima).

Misato is qualified to take command during Commander Gendo Ikari's absence, and has demonstrated her ability to make the right decisions under extreme situations. Her spontaneity and strategic genius are evident during the Angels' attacks. Thanks to these abilities, NERV has managed to overcome threats of great magnitude such as Ramiel and Sahaquiel.

Misato is a 29-year-old Japanese woman with fair skin, average height (1.63 m) and a slim build. She has wavy indigo-blue hair, although it is sometimes depicted as purple, and dark brown eyes. Throughout the series, she is seen as a woman of great physical attractiveness, standing out not only for her appearance, but also for her seductive and flirtatious personality.

Her clothing varies depending on the situation. At home, she usually wears casual clothes, such as shorts and a tank top. While in her professional role, she wears the NERV uniform, consisting of a red jacket with her rank, a short black dress and brown boots. In addition, she always wears a necklace with a cross, which is an object of great sentimental value that she has kept since her childhood.

Born on December 8, 1986, Misato is the daughter of the prestigious Dr. Katsuragi, who commanded the scientific expedition that traveled to Antarctica in the year of the Second Impact.

Misato is the only survivor of those who were there during this event. She was saved by her father, who placed her in a life capsule. Because of this, she was traumatized and suffered from aphasia (loss of speech) for two years. After overcoming aphasia, she developed a strong desire to avenge her father and destroy the Angels.

She always wears a white cross around her neck that her father left her before he died. Although Misato hated him because he was always too busy with his work to spend time with her and her mother, his sacrifice changed her way of seeing him. In fact, the cross she always wears reminds her of this and what her mission in life is. Misato studied at Kyoto University. There she met Ritsuko Akagi, who would become her best friend, and Ryoji Kaji, who would later become her lover. Her relationship with the latter was so passionate that they skipped classes for a week to have sex. However, Misato broke off her relationship with him after realizing the excessive resemblance between Kaji and her father.

After graduating, Misato joined NERV and spent some time working at the German branch, where she met Asuka Langley Soryu. Eventually, she was transferred to Japan and assigned as the head of operations at NERV headquarters. Her job would be to come up with strategies to take down the Angels.
