Mari has brown hair tied in two ponytails with side-parted bangs. She wears an indigo headband with a white robotic design. Her eyes are teal, and she wears burgundy-framed glasses. She wears a white shirt with a symbol on the left chest, a dark gray tie, a red and green pleated skirt with black knee-high socks, and brown tasseled loafers.

She wears pink plugsuits with stylized accents and the numbers 05 and 08 are printed on the plugsuits.

His first plug suit was dark green with lots of detail, and he wore a helmet with it.

Mari has a rather energetic and enigmatic personality and is generally in a good mood. She enjoys piloting her Evangelion, Evangelion Provisional Unit-05, and sometimes sings to herself in the entry plug. She is also very friendly, although in combat she can be extremely aggressive. Furthermore, Mari is very noble in her fight against the Third Angel, being willing to sacrifice her life to destroy it by self-destructing her EVA. In the end, however, the entry plugs ejected seconds before the explosion that would have killed her.

In Mari's first confrontation with the Third Angel, she did not utilize any tactics. Instead, the fight featured her attacking the Angel head-on, chasing it out of the base, and restraining it before self-destructing. She also appears to be aware of the EVAs' sentient nature to some extent, going so far as to directly address them in a compassionate tone and even whispering goodbye to Unit-05 after its destruction. This makes it unlikely that she was the one who sabotaged it, though her status as an acquaintance of Ryoji Kaji is suspect. When the Tenth Angel attacked Tokyo-3 at the end of the film, Mari launched Evangelion Unit-02 with assistance from IPEA to participate in the battle, intercepting the Angel inside the Geofront while wielding dual paddle rifles. However, unlike Asuka's repeated attempts to damage the Angel in the series, Mari quickly gave up on the ranged attacks and charged screaming with a GB-012 Evangelion Custom Portable Electric Shock Ordinance "Thunder Spear"[9], leaping onto the Angel and firing Unit-02's needle guns in a failed attempt to penetrate the Angel's AT Field with a point-blank attack. In the Funimation English dub, she is quite foul-mouthed and constantly taunts her opponents while piloting.

He also demonstrated considerable knowledge of the inner workings of the Evangelions by activating Unit-02's Beast Mode (resembling a "controlled Berserk"). During this, he demonstrated bloodthirsty, animalistic behavior not unlike that of the EVA, and despite suffering great damage, he never attempted to retreat, instead pressing his attacks until his EVA was damaged beyond combat capability.
