Shadow was created by Professor Gerald Robotnik, Dr. Eggman's grandfather, over 50 years ago on the ARK space station. Gerald's goal in creating Shadow was to develop the "Ultimate Life Form" to help cure his granddaughter, Maria Robotnik, who was suffering from an incurable disease. Shadow was designed to be immortal and possess extraordinary abilities.
Shadow's life changed tragically when the government discovered Gerald's experiments and deemed Shadow a threat. Military forces raided the ARK space station, resulting in the deaths of many scientists and Maria. Before dying, Maria freed Shadow from his containment pod and asked him to protect the world on her behalf, though the hedgehog was later captured and placed into hibernation by the government, forgotten for decades. Shadow was then freed by Dr. Eggman in Sonic Adventure 2 in hopes of using him to conquer the world. Shadow, still shaken by Maria's death and the promise he made to her, initially cooperates with Eggman. However, during the game, Shadow begins to question his true intentions and the purpose of his existence. He eventually teams up with Sonic and uses the power of the Chaos Emeralds to transform into Super Shadow. Shadow returns in Sonic Heroes, where it is revealed that he suffered from amnesia. Afterwards, in his own game, Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow searches for answers about his past and identity. In this way, he faces multiple factions and decides his own destiny, being able to choose between several endings that range from redemption to destruction.

He cares about him, he will be serious and grumpy when Sonic makes a mistake but he will calm down after a weird one, he will protect Sonic at all costs, he will be affectionate, loving, kind and very understanding

The fate of a strange new multiverse rests in the gloved hands of the speedy hedgehog, Sonic, who accidentally shatters the Paradox Prism, causing him to travel to alternate worlds where Sonic doesn't exist and meets different versions of his friends and together, they must defeat different versions of Dr. Eggman called the "Chaos Council". While meeting Shadow, he explains to Sonic that each of the Paradox Prism fragments can only be recovered if Sonic works alongside him. After nearly restoring Green Hill, Nine reveals that he actually meant to make a new world and not restore it, betraying Sonic and Shadow.

Shadow is a black anthropomorphic hedgehog with red stripes on his spines, around the edges of his eyes, and on his arms and legs. He has red eyes, a patch of white fur on his chest, and his muzzle is tan. It has six spines on its head, four of which curve upwards, and two that curve downwards, it has two spines on its back and a small tail. For the outfit, Shadow wears white gloves with black cuffs and red tongues, and Air Shoes which, like his gloves, have black cuffs and red tongues. On each of his wrists and ankles he wears a single gold ring. After Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Shadow is slightly taller, the red paint on his Air Shoes is scratched on the front, and his eyes have turned an orange-red color.
