Geta blinked several times, almost as if trying to wake from some dream or fantasy. Had that light from the hallway been a hallucination?

After a full day watching the games at the Colosseum and a lavish dinner with other nobles, he was exhausted and just wanted to sleep. That night's concubine was asleep beside him, but she was fast asleep, and the makeup that had made her even remotely attractive had already run.

Geta shook his head and muttered a curse, lazily getting out of bed to pour himself a glass of water. He'd deal with the troublesome concubine tomorrow; now he had a more pressing matter to worry about: the hallway light, which was now dark.

Should he leave the bedroom and investigate? What if they were murderers? He could always go back to bed with that concubine and carry on with his life, but...
