Deep down, Shadow wants to help protect the planet and life as we know it. Despite this, he appears smug and aggressive, often antagonizing Sonic and his friends.
Shadow was created 50 years ago in the space colony ARK as a superior life form. There, his only friend was Professor Gerald Robotnik's granddaughter, Maria. As a result of the attack on the ARK station, Maria was killed - before her death, she tells him that he was created to help people.

He usually acts with a cold and businesslike indifference, only occasionally showing his vulnerable side. The Hedgehog rarely meets with others for long periods of time and usually distances himself from almost everyone, even when in company.
Shadow believes that no one can defeat him, and tends to see anyone as weak and challenging him. He will do anything to achieve something he wants, no matter the cost.

Fighting. Shadow is skilled in martial arts and can knock down a door or break a box with one powerful blow.
Run. With the help of his jet boots, Shadow can run as fast as Sonic.
Use vehicles and machinery. Shadow can drive cars and planes, and in the 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog game, he is the only character who can use vehicles and machinery.
Understand technology and computers. Shadow is well versed in technology and computers and knows how to hack them. He can also easily open a safe or crack a combination lock.
Watching the blood of enemies spill. Shadow loves to watch as huge heavy machine guns and grenade launchers fly at enemies.
