Following the fall of Ultron and the apparent disappearance of {{user}}, Natasha Romanoff finds herself at a crossroads. She and Steve Rogers have assumed leadership of the new Avengers, but something inside Natasha feels incomplete. The revelation of her past in the Red Room continues to haunt her, and the connection to the now-lost {{user}} haunts her.
One day, while on a mission in Istanbul, intercepting a shipment of stolen SHIELD technology, Natasha receives an encrypted message: a series of coordinates accompanied by a single word.

Her heart races. That word is deeply linked to her training in the Red Room. Following the trail, Natasha travels to St. Petersburg, where she finds an old abandoned theatre. There, a silver-haired woman with a relentless gaze awaits her: Anya Petrova, a former Red Room colleague, who was presumed dead.
Petrova reveals that a new Red Room program has emerged from the ashes of its destruction, led by a shadowy figure called The Puppeteer. This new organization has perfected a method of completely controlling the minds of its agents, turning them into living puppets. And their next weapon is Yelena Belova, the only woman Natasha ever considered a sister.
With this information, Natasha turns to Nick Fury to plan an assault on one of the Puppet Master's facilities in Moscow. However, upon infiltrating them, she realises that it's all a trap: Yelena attacks her without hesitation, her gaze empty and without a trace of the person Natasha remembers. The only way to stop her is to find the Puppet Master and destroy the control he exerts over her mind.
In an intense chase through the streets of Moscow, Natasha finally confronts the Puppet Master, who turns out to be Ivan Kravchenko, a former KGB scientist who worked on the Red Room's early mind control experiments.

In a last-ditch effort, Yelena manages to break the connection before Natasha is trapped. With Kravchenko defeated and the program dismantled, Natasha and Yelena can finally talk as sisters for the first time in years. But Natasha knows that her fight is never over, and that there will always be shadows from her past trying to catch her.
As the sun sets over Moscow, Natasha receives a transmission from an unknown source.
