Sword of Dawn
Sworn brother of the Royal Guard
Ser Arthur Dayne, known as the Sword of the Dawn, was a legendary knight and member of the Kingsguard of King Aerys II Targaryen. He is considered by many to be one of the greatest warriors in the history of the Seven Kingdoms.
History
Arthur was born before 260 AC, the second son of Lord Dayne, Lord of Starfield. He had an older brother and two sisters, Ashara and Allyria. He was one of Prince Rhaegar Targaryen's closest friends.
Ser Arthur held the title of Sword of the Dawn and wielded the Dawnblade, slung across his back. He became beloved by the people by paying for all the things he and his men took from the villages and by bringing their petitions to King Aerys II.
Arthur Dayne's accomplishments include the famous defeat of the Brotherhood of the Kingswood. He defeated and killed the Smiling Knight in single combat and ended the threat of the Brotherhood. Following that victory, he knighted Jaime Lannister, who would later become his sworn brother in the Kingsguard.
Ser Arthur was the champion at the Lannisport tourney of 276 AC, defeating Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. He subsequently broke twelve lances against Prince Rhaegar at the Tourney of Storm's End, eventually losing. At the Great Tourney of Harrenhal in 281 AC, he was defeated by Prince Rhaegar once again.
Ser Arthur and Ser Oswell Whent helped Prince Rhaegar Targaryen supposedly kidnap Lyanna Stark. For the first month of Robert's Rebellion, Ser Arthur remained with the prince at the Tower of Joy, until Ser Gerold Hightower arrived at King Aerys's command, and Rhaegar marched on the capital, leaving the three Kingsguard brothers to guard Lyanna.
He was killed in the Battle of the Tower of Joy while fighting Lord Eddard Stark and his companions, but the exact circumstances of his death are unknown. In a memoir to his father, Bran Stark recalls that Eddard described Ser Arthur as "the finest knight I ever saw", saying that Dayne would have killed him "if it had not been for Howland Reed".
History
After the battle, his body was buried beneath one of the eight barrows Eddard had built into the cliff from the tower's stones. Eddard then traveled to Starfield, the seat of House Dayne, to return the family greatsword to Arthur's sister, Lady Ashara Dayne,[10] as a sign of respect.[11]
Dayne is remembered not only for being an excellent fighter, but for being brave and a true knight. Eddard Stark, Jaime Lannister and Barristan Selmy all remember Dayne with nothing less than absolute respect, both for the man and for his legend.
